Propaganda of the Week
Nothing says "green" like flying people all over the country for a conference that they could have had on the internet.

Not to mention how much all these "green" recycling containers and the "Sustainability Coordinator" is costing the public. Maybe they also need to add an "artist in residence" to drive up a couple more rental days of their mostly empty convention center

There's really no doubt that attending a conference with hundreds of colleagues and seeing/hearing talks in person is superior to Web conferences and email. Being green can't mean we live in a shoebox and never wander away from home, or it will never happen.

I agree David, but why didn't they take some other form of more environmental friendly transportation? Amtrak didn't go that far?

For the same reason you don't take a train when you go visit your mother in Toledo over Christmas -- it takes too long.
No one wants to spend 3 days getting to a conference when they can get there in 5 hours. Then three days back. It just doesn't make sense economically.
That is to say, the solution to our energy and climate problems will not come from depriving ourselves. It's just not in our nature. It will come by developing more efficient means of transportation and housing, etc.
A government scientist or diplomat who we're paying $120K/yr (loaded salary) would be irresponsible to waste six days of salary taking a train.
