Thoughtless

While out on a gorgeous Sunday stroll along Hawthorne, we glanced at a sidewalk newsrack with the dead-tree version of the O in it. There above the fold was a shouting headline about the mentally ill guy they caught tagging the other night -- he's caused many thousands of dollars of damage in his graffiti "career." But then, showing some truly lousy journalistic judgment, they feel compelled to run a full-color photo of this dude's handiwork right next to the headline. Wow, that will deter the taggers. Way to go.

Such is life when living in a canvas and that simply reflecting values of the community.

Hey, look at this way. This guy finally has the fame that inspired his little run all over Portland, so he's no longer a threat. Now if we just convince the 30,000 other Alberta ah-teests that water painting is the way to go, the problem is solved.

Abe, I don't understand what that means, but there is absolutely no reason to show a photo of a tag -- especially not in a newsrack on the street -- ever.

err yes Jack there is a reason to "show a photo of a tag" because the story was about how this idiot was eventually caught by citizen action.

By showing the photo, " we" as fellow afflicted citizens can say " hey Ive seen that graffiti before and now I know that tagger is being punished, i feel better about my neighborhood, civil action, and the ongoing efforts to to stop those that might besmirch my neighborhood".

You shouldn't need a photo to get you to think that. Especially when attention seems to be what this form of mental illness is about. Photos encourage others to take up this filthy, anti-social habit.
