State says county is spending rental car tax illegally
And if they're right, it could be the death of the infernal Convention Center hotel boondoggle.
One can only hope.

That this proverbial bad penny, convention center hotel, keeps coming back for consideration is a sure sign local government in PDX have too much money and needs to be trimmed.

Just wondering... does anyone else think that the ongoing discussion of a city-backed hotel is scaring away any private plans there are? Wouldn't a private initiative materialize if we just nixed this thing altogether?

No. Anyone with private money who looks at this realizes that it's not worth building. Portland has never been a hot national convention town, and it never will be no matter what the situation with hotel space. Too hard to get to for most of the country, and bad weather for seven or eight months out of the year.
If the market would really bear a huge hotel in Portland, some private developer would have built it shortly after the last Convention Center expansion was completed -- which was in 2003.

No kidding. This seems beyond obvious, and I'm not even a real estate magnate, developer, or financier...I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
