Wild berry jam

We just got back from a special evening at Farmer Don's. A fine scene out in the country as the full moon rose stage left. Ashleigh Flynn headlined, and she and her band were great. But for me the hit of the show was an unplugged trio who kicked the festivities off by pumping out a monster hour-long bluegrass-flavored instrumental medley that defies description.

Given the instrumentation, you would expect a little "Dawg" music, and there was some of that, but just about everything else under the sun poured out as well. Gershwin, Zeppelin, "Funky Town," Motown, classical, and more just kept coming in waves. When they took it from Beethoven's Fifth to "Paint it Black" and back again, I knew these guys were crazy. Good crazy.

Whoever you are, pickers, here's to ya.

'Instrumentation'??

Or random surviving flotsam of the '96 flood?

That's Sneakin' Out. They're amazingly good. Nice guys too! I catch them every chance I get. They never disappoint. Glad you liked them, Jack!

True virtuosi.

The band is actually Steppin' Out...Ashleigh recorded an album with them called Sneaking Out. You can find it and her other stuff here:

Don, the mohawked percussionist, expanded the musical knowledge of our boys when they were younger. David, on mandolin, is also part of a group that does a sort of bluegrass-tinged chamber music version of the entire Sgt Pepper album that shouldn't be missed.

Ashleigh's playing out in The Dalles tonight (Fri) in the very cool Erin Glenn Winery, the old federal mint complete with hewn basalt vaults. It's a pleasant 90 minute drive to our favorite small town.

Steppin' Out played last Saturday at the downtown Farmer's Market. I had the same reaction -- just crazy good.

These guys played for our wedding reception 2 yrs ago in St. Johns--good stuff!!!

Don't forget Mike "cheddar" on Bass.
I really liked Sneakin' Out's first CD: Train Wreck.
Kinda describes their musical style.
