A beautiful day in the neighborhood
In all the years I've been writing this blog, I've never really seen what the server on which it resides looks like. There have been quite a few over the years. Finally, through the graces of my excellent web host, I now have an image:
To give you an idea of the scale, those boxes are on the lower level of this rack:
What a world.

So everybody doesn't think that this is some small company based on the empty space in that 2nd picture, that is actually their new expansion to their current space. There will be 270 more servers like Jack's just like that in there someday (his was one of the first ones in).

Ah, servers in server racks, what can't they do? Not much. If you're CNF (now Con-Way) you can use the heat generated to heat an entire building.
I still remember helping move CNF, Menlo, Emery and Con-Way out of their old digs (Montgomery Park and the building adjacent to the original CNF building) and walking into the brand new server room in the basement of the new building. Truly impressive to see rack after rack of servers all churning away, ensuring the freight they carried was properly moving to where it was going all over the world.
If only Vera had let CNF build a proper parking garage next door, NW 21st and 23rd would have had an alternative place to park as CNF could have charged money for the parking on the weekends. Instead CNF/Con-Way had to keep the ugly flat parking lots that were just so fun to park on during the summer.
At least the church was saved! Never mind that the 405 freeway obliterates it anyway.
I really hope that Con-Way actually does do something spectacular with that area, it truly needs the help after the swipe the 405 took out of it so long ago.
