Somebody smart once warned that you shouldn't attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity. That may explain the Bush administration and torture.

Why's it an either-or? Stupidity that's this unfathomable is itself malicious.

Hanlon's Razor: "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity." I have it subtley posted over my desk at work, where I can meditate on it as needed.
