Steel Bridge to close all summer -- even to MAX, for a while

Like they say, "Plan Alternate Route."

See I told you that you shouldn't have build light rail ever cause it will be closed for two weeks. Cars could've have driven to another bridge.

There I got that in before the MAX haters managed to do it. By the way the next MAX line will be built to Milwaukie to be followed by MAX to Clark County.

"Give Free Cars rather than Build Mass Transit"

Um. It would be nice if my bus just went where it was supposed to go for a month or two, but that's too much to ask.

Buses over MAX or streetcar any day. Flexibility is key. Tracks will only go one place forever, and people have to go to the MAX, instead of having the MAX come to them.

You know the problem here is that the people who argue that buses are better than light rail lines would be arguing that cars are better than buses if MAX didn't exist. Many light rail supporters will secretly tell you that they support light rail because rail opponents aren't just MAX opponents but mass transit opponents. And they figure light rail will be harder to abandon than a bus company.

Light rail haters have said that the transportation solution is to build freeways and give people free cars if necessary. And when you ask them freeways where their answer is, "Well a freeway from Oregon City to Mollalla." They believe that central cities, like Portland, need to die so they can be rebuilt, "eventually" by the god of private enterprise.

So the next time someone argues about the cost of light rail and sings that praises of buses, remember that they don't believe in buses either.

Greg C

Greg, that is simply bulls**t. There are many critics of fixed rail who genuinely support buses. You need to get out more.

They've got a good thing going with BRT in Eugene, in case anybody missed it.

Train nerds don't get wood for BRT like they do for rail, but there are obvious advantages of BRT over rail (not to mention traditional bus service).

Jack,

I have typed four paragraphs arguing with you but I am just to tired tonight to finish it.

Basically you are right as far as individuals are concerned. You are wrong IMHO as far as the organized opposition is concerned and I guess it is the organized opposition I am rerally reacting to.

Greg C

Greg C,
That whole characterization of light opposition was complete nonsense. Individual or organized.
