I've gone to a couple of the Ross Island heron rookerie tours - this is by canoe flotilla. They are worth the experience. You also get to witness the devastation wrought by Ross Island Sand & Gravel.

The Great Blue Heron Week events are slightly different every year, but always fun and educational. It's very cool to have an official city bird. And, as I understand the story, Bridgeport's Blue Heron Ale was originally made in honor of that designation.
In addition to canoe trips, there are usually walks and bike rides. And, for those interested in the South Waterfront District, there should be views directly across to heron nests from their greenway.
