I think I stopped reading when I got to this quote:

she has a lot in common with another famous character — the Marschallin in Strauss’s bittersweet comic opera “Der Rosenkavalier.”

Is Ms. Dowd trying to be the Dennis Miller of the NY Times? A 'Rocky' reference I get. A comic opera? Not so much.

The Marschallin is a princess married to a Viennese field marshal who has a liaison dangereuse with a younger man, Count Octavian.

Gosh, for a second I though MoDo was talking about some trendy new version with a Viennesse field marshal having a gay affair, but it was just bad writing and editing ...
