28 strong men

Did you know that Portland had a Great Fire? Yep. In 1873. Dan Haneckow tells the story -- and tells it well -- here.

Great read! Thanks for posting this little known history of Portland.

Don't thank me -- thank Dan.

Thanks Dan and Jack. Posts like this help bring history to life. In this singular post there are many mentions of people/events that streets were eventually named after. That is why history cannot be forgotten in the context of the present furor of renaming streets. Having a child ask "why is our street named Skidmore, its not all that good for skidding?" becomes an opportunity to tell the story of how that name was given.

Very good read.

“The site of Portland that was a forest in 1843 is now a city that any state of the union might be proud of. The town of Portland that had one settler and one family in 1843 is now a city of 12,000 inhabitants, without any paupers.

–Samuels Directory for Portland Oregon 1873."

How times have changed.
