Where I grew up, more hard times
When I wrote a while back about the 40th anniversary of the Newark riots, I opined that the city was still in a deep hole with no apparent hope of crawling out. A couple of people from back that way wrote me to take umbrage at my comment, but I think it's accurate. Over the weekend, one of the most chilling multiple murders in the city's history took place, and the bright young fellow who's been gentrifying the mayor's office has had his honeymoon with the public cut way short.
"Hey, little heroes, summer's long, but I guess it ain't very sweet around here any more..."

So tragic. I can't imagine the heartbreak of the families involved.
Anyone have any ideas of a solution to this senseless violence?

a solution to this senseless violence
Lots of people like capital punishment, and revenge can be a tasty dish. I think it doesn't work, though. Maybe it would help, in the long term, to invest more in educating young people and giving more of them (not just the basketball stars) alternatives to violence, crime and drugs.

I dunno, seems that basketball stars (or pro sports players in general) are the ones glorifying "violence, crime and drugs."
I dont think they were given alternatives. If anything, they are given the means.
