Sly & the Family Stone (I think the drummer was adopted) had some rise to fame in the late 60s - from winning "some kind of groovy bread" as the best new talent at the Ohio State Fair in 1968 to playing before 500,000+ at Woodstock in 1969.

I had the privilege of seeing the Family in its post-Woodstock prime at Madison Square Garden. It was silly fun and an intense political statement at the same time.
