Between being a practicing lawyer and a novelist, he served as a Democratic state legislator in Mississippi - from 1983 to 1990.
He was recruited in the mid-90s to run for the US Senate against Thad Cochran. His answer, when declining, is the single best answer for NOT running ever given:
"Unfortunately, they expect US Senators to wear socks."
