Rockin' on

If you're a regular web surfer, by now you've seen one or more of those sites that display the worst music album covers of all time. They're quite a hoot. On at least one of these sites, one of the hilariously bad dust jackets displayed is this:

Pretty bad. But did you know that the guy in the middle is now the newest member of Congress from New York State?

Heh. Thanks for bringing that image back into my life. My parents had this album when I was growing up in NY. That picture was wrong then, and it has not gotten any better with age.

It's wrong, but not sick and wrong.

Now if you were a (Stephen) Colbert Report fan you would have gotten to not only see the album cover, but John Hall singing the National Anthem with Colbert. It was great.

Who says I'm not a Colbert fan? You're on notice!

It has been said that because of his performance on the Colbert show, he got the Colbert "bump" and subsquently won the election.

Is that all it takes now?

Well, according to Colbert, yes. I love that guy.

.....and in fact today, all the naked guys standing behind him are cabinet-level Republicans with high-ranking positions in the Department of Homeland Security......

Well at least I'm not dead to you!

That album cover and all this talk about "bumps" makes me want to say something homophobic, clench my cheeks and curl up in a fetal position. O.K. I said it...now crucify me! Jack it's all your fault for inciting homomphobia.

Before Orleans went commercial, they toured extensively in upstate New York, and I got to see them several times. They were unbelievably good. John Hall was (is?) an amazing guitarist, and did a lot of session work. I also got to play basketball with him once, and he was the best player on the court. It was very painful to see them "sell out" and put out stuff like this. One of the reasons he left Orleans, which he founded, was that it went in a direction that led to this album cover. Also, John Hall was very active in Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE) back in 1982, along with Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and others. Finally, John Hall went through some pretty rough addictions to drugs and/or alcohol. All in all, I'm willing to forgive him for this...
