I guess the girl wouldn't ever believe that the Americans also eat up soybean curd.

About 25 years ago, I went as a reporter to the annual conference of the American Soyfoods Association, which was primarily a bunch of food co-op types and their counterparts who made tofu. Several big Japanese tofu processors, as well as the manufacturers of tofu-making equipment. These guys were treated like gods, but the gods were not amused by the luncheon, which was a testament to the versatility of tofu. But the Japanese businessmen were heard muttering angrily.

An American soyfood entrepreneur who understood Japanese translated. "They're saying, 'Where's the meat?'"
