Cogen vs. Frederick: The video
The two candidates for Multnomah County commission did a head-to-head at the Rose City Park neighborhood meeting the other night, and that troublemaker Jim Karlock videotaped the whole thing. Check it out.

Three cheers for Jim Karlock! He has video on every broken campaign promise for the last umpteen years. If they said it, Jim taped it.

That's a great video. I was reminded again why I support Jeff Cogen. Lew Frederick is also a fanastic candidate. Frankly, I wish we could put 'em both on the county commission.

I agree with Dave. There are few other citizens who come close to Jim Karlock's diligence in showing up, listening, and disseminating information from all kinds of events, all over the city. Thank you for all you do to promote citizen awareness of issues, Jim.

What I saw was a guy who seemed to be a highly rev'd up motivational speaker who probably makes everyone around him feel good. Then I saw a more casual guy, like one of the neighbors, with a couple goofy ideas. One was turning schools into urgent care clinics. The other was that the county should subsidize local medical malpractice, hypothesizing this might increase physician density in N-NE such that people ipso facto would be blessed with better medical care.
I then started feeling a little scared and disappointed.
I then took a look at my property tax bill and googled up the Multnomah County website to look at the list of things the county is alledgedly provided us all with now ... not me particularly, but my less fortunate fellow man in the county.
I asked myself whether it seemed the county or the new candidates were zeroing in on appropriate civic activities given my somewhat painful financial contribution to it's existence.
Now I'm scared, disappointed and sad.

Thank you, Jim Karlock.
Most every service provided by the County is delivered at subsistence levels, if at all. We need county commissioners who are motivated to serve the public, whether it benefits their reelection platform or not. The county can no longer afford patronage jobs or six figure consulting contracts. Financial bailouts for personal friends and campaign contributors should be grounds for outrage from voters and the other commissioners. This is full time work that demands honest and respectful communication: all of which have been in short supply the last few years.
I voted for Cogen, only because he's indicated a willingess to open Wapato. If he views the job a mere stepping stone to higher office, it will be the last time I vote for him.
The rampant cronyism/back scratching, and top-heavy management must be reformed. I am concerned it might get worse no matter who wins. Political machines are like that.
So long as Wapato Jail sits empty (or the Sellwood Bridge replacement remains unfunded), we need less vision, less public relations junk mail, and more transparency.
I'm not real worried about how MultCo or CoP can solve global warming one press release at a time...I am worried about the drug addicts that aren't getting treatment or jail, children who go to bed hungry, and middle class families who can't afford the daily necessities of life.
