Got ice?

It's cool tonight, but soak it up, Portland. There's a big heat wave coming our way, according to the weather prognosticators. Mark "Doogie" Nelsen has it at 100(F) on Friday, and 105 on both Saturday and Sunday. KGW's saying 102 Friday, 105 on Saturday. As usual, the Weather Channel's more conservative, calling for 99-101-97. Any way you cut it, though, that's hot by our standards. The hottest it's ever gotten in Portland is 107.

Yes, and that 107 came before we had Global Warming!!

Channel 8 this morning mentioned the record heat wave of 1941, which has never been duplicated nor exceeded: four days of temps in the 3 digits.

kgw lowered their Fri-Sat forecast...showed Sunday on the news this morning but only has a 5 day on their website. Anyway, they now expect 99 Fri-100 Sat.

A little more bearable I guess.

So does anyone know on what day and in what year that 107 was reached? Having lived all my life in the Willamette Valley between Milwaukie and Portland I can recall a few times where the temps have come close to that. I remember a day in July ( maybe the 15th.) in 1970 when I thought the temperature climbed over 105. I recall it was the evening I went on my very first date, a movie at Cinema 21 and despite the heat we still held hands. Love makes us do crazy things.

Gleaned from the NWS website:

The official high temp was 107 on:
July 30, 1965
August 8, 1981
August 10, 1981

BTW, Kai, that heat wave in 1981 also hit triple digits four days in a row (and almost 5 or 6:
August 5, 1981 - 86 degrees

August 6, 1981 - 99 degrees

August 7, 1981 - 103 degrees

August 8, 1981 - 107 degrees

August 9, 1981 - 105 degrees

August 10, 1981 - 107 degrees

August 11, 1981 - 97 degrees

August 12, 1981 - 87 degrees

I can't get to the data pre-1941 yet.

This is an off-topic comment, but curious - I thought major volcanic eruptions were supposed to cool the earth, but 81 seemed like a pretty hot year, and wasn't there some volcanic activity that year somewhere?

If you mean Mt St Helens wasn't that 1980?

G W Bush caused the heat wave in 1981

That was the year Reagan cut rich people's taxes and the prime rate of interest went up to 21 percent. Good times.
