Another celebrity endorsement deal

Oregonian columnist Steve Duin has reached agreement with Oil Can Henry's, the quickie auto lube chain, to continue the use of Duin's likeness on the company's logo. Terms of the deal were not formally disclosed, but sources in the advertising industry reported that it was a five-year renewal contract worth $3.5 million.

In addition to signing Duin up for a new five-year endorsement term, the auto service franchise group also revealed that the columnist's brake and transmission fluids were very dirty, and needed to be completely flushed and replaced to avoid immediate and catastrophic damage to his car and all of its contents.

This is a little off topic, but for some reason Duin's photo reminded me of this T-Shirt my 14 year old kid likes to wear around. The shirt has a replication of a .357 Magnum and below the gun it states "Guns don't kill people, people with mustaches kill people."

I always enjoy reading Duin's columns, but his writing frequently leads me to wonder if he's ALWAYS on a low boil inside.

I've been called a cynic many times (I prefer the "pragmatist" label)...But I'm shocked how infrequently I can relate to Duin's perspective.

Does anybody else get the impression that he's more pissed off than amused by most of what he writes about?

"Amused" is not a word that ever comes to mind in connection with Steve Duin.

So, I'm just curious (maybe I haven't been reading Bojack long enough)... what is the general beef with Duin? Are there certain issues that he's really misfired on?

Posted by: TKrueg at July 17, 2006 04:22 PM

I don't have much of a beef with Duin. He kisses Erik Sten's hindquarters, but other than that he's o.k. Plus, by comparison he makes me look like a happy-go-lucky guy with a infectiously positive attitude and a charming personality.

I like Steve just fine and agree with him a lot.

That's probably why, Mr. T.

There are a few things I've disagreed with him on. And I do think the 'celebrity endorsement' is quite amusing. So...Duin is a Sten cell researcher?

He's Stennier than a Bus kid with a six-pack of Pabst. Not quite up to Willy Week's "defining election of our time" or whatever that hoo-ha was, but close.

Alan, you are confused. That's an early shot of Randy Leonard when he was the head of the firefighters' union.

Ah yes. I see that after a second look.

"Stennier than a Bus kid with a 6 pack of Pabst." This is why I read Jack Bog's blog. If I had the energy, I'd get you a black t-shirt with the above phrase on the front and a pic of Sten's head on the back.

Please, just the teeth.

Oil Can Henry's stripped my oil plug and destroyed my oil pan several years back, so I have not returned. My regular mechanic was baffled at how incompetent they must have been to have done so much damage with an oil change.

So, watch out!

What about the Lennox air conditioning deal that he's apparently got going, also? See

Actually, that's his brother, Dirk Duin.
