How it's done

Comments (15)

I first met Paul working with him on the city's Skateboard Park committee. He used to be a professional skateboarder.

He's one of those bureaucrats you meet who really cares about doing his job well, and he's worked hard with the neighborhoods on a lot of difficult issues as the City's Noise Control Officer.

He's got two write-in votes from our house. (Hmm, maybe I should add from two people each with one ballot...)

Check out Paul's simple website at http://www.newsheriffpdx.com/

His platform is to set things straight and put himself out of the job. It's often the reluctant candidates that serve best.

Oh, thank you. Also, thank you for filling us in about the 2 ballots. I thought it was a mistake and was planning to pick one at random to fill out and discard the other.

Does anyone know if there is a write-in campaign for Metro Council President? I can't vote for Bragdon. And for any of the judicial positions?

I thought you were writing in Foxworth.

Paul really is an amazing candidate and a great problem solver. He is really genuine about this campaign, grassroots doesn't begin to describe it. Your support means a lot (to Paul and to BG).

So sorry to post twice in a row but I forgot to say that Paul Van Orden is holding a press conference on the steps of the Justice Center today at high noon.

Uh Jack, Van Orden is not qualified to run. I mean legally qualified. You have to have been a cop for two years and noise enforcment officer doesn't count. All of his votes will be invalidated and may not be reported as a result.

I write in my own name for Metro Council President.

Why? Well I don't believe Metro should even exist. It is a useless extra layer of government that costs taxpayers millions.. And for what? Oppressive land-use controls, substandard roads and highways, 1,386,743 miles of bike lanes for 300 bicyclists.

As Metro Council President, I will effectively shut Metro down by making all positions (including council positions) non-paid volunteer jobs.

Vote for me.

Are you running as the candidate of the Exaggeration Party?

All of his votes will be invalidated and may not be reported as a result.

Even if that's true, it's better than the alternative.

Anthony gets all my votes!!! (I'm buying extra stamps for all the ballots I'll be filling out).

Vote for Anthony! he has more vision than a 10-eyed Tommy Potter.

Word.

Bob,

From reading his campaign website, Mr. Van Orden was a "regional Environmental Law Enforcement Officer woring in Newark New Jersey" for what appears to be for close to five years. I don't believe the qualification requirements state that you had to have been a Law Enforcement Officer in Oregon.

Just wanted to clear that up.

From the ORSs:

206.015 Qualifications of sheriff; certification as police officer; determination of eligibility to be candidate for election to office of sheriff. (1) A person is not eligible to be a candidate for election or appointment to the office of sheriff unless:

(a) The person is 21 years of age or older;

(b) The person has at least four years’ experience as a full-time law enforcement officer or at least two years’ experience as a full-time law enforcement officer with at least two years’ post-high-school education; and

(c) The person has not been convicted of a felony or of any other crime that would prevent the person from being certified as a police officer under ORS 181.610 to 181.712.

(2) As used in subsection (1) of this section, “two years’ post-high-school education” means four semesters or six quarters of classroom education in a formal course of study undertaken after graduation from high school in any accredited college or university. The term does not include apprenticeship or on-the-job training.

(3) If the person is not certified as a police officer by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training at the time of accepting appointment or filing as a candidate, a person elected or appointed to the office of sheriff must obtain the certification not later than one year after taking office. A copy of the certification shall be filed with the county clerk or the county official in charge of elections. The county governing body shall declare the office of sheriff vacant when the person serving as sheriff is not certified as a police officer within one year after taking office.

(4) The Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, in consultation with the Board on Public Safety Standards and Training, shall establish a procedure for determining whether an individual is eligible under subsection (1) of this section to be a candidate for election to the office of sheriff. A copy of the department’s determination of an individual’s eligibility to be a candidate for election to the office of sheriff shall be filed with the county clerk or county official in charge of elections not later than the 61st day before the date of the election. If the department determines that the individual is not eligible to be a candidate for election to the office of sheriff, the county clerk or county official in charge of elections shall not place the name of the individual on the ballot at the election. [1971 c.299 §1; 1981 c.808 §5; 1987 c.484 §1; 1993 c.493 §87; 1997 c.853 §35]

Just a suggestion, you might want to read what it said on the ballot. I believe there was something on there or the secrecy envelope that said you are not suppose to show your ballot to others. My guess is this would include posting a portion on your blog.

While I doubt it is a violation of election law, it is in bad taste.
