Victor and vanquished
Set the alarm clock (or more likely, the Tivo or VCR) for the Nick Fish talk show "Outlook Portland" tomorrow morning. His guest will be Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams, Fish's rival in last year's brutal, expensive council election.
The Fish tells me that the topics of the interview (recorded earlier -- even Nick probably doesn't get up that early on a Sunday) include "the tram, charter review, school funding, public power, Wal-Mart, Tom Potter, Vera Katz, tax relief, and the cell phone tax." I wonder if they'll be any on-air mention of Adams's floating some of his gobs of campaign cash to help Fish pay off his campaign debts -- an odd, if magnanimous, gesture.
It starts at 6:30 a.m. on WB (cable channel 3 around here).

For you broadcast-only throwbacks like me, that's channel 5 or channel 32 in Portland.

There's a broadcast channel 5 in Portland?

WB used to be 4 and 32, but it changed to 5 and 32 last year or some such.

TIVO. My wife sand I have seen EVERY Nick Fish show. I like to tease the City Hall reporters when she's on.
TIVO. I got to see what Jack Bog looked like.
TIVO. You decide what you watch, when you want to.
I like Sam. I really think he listens and learns. I'm looking forward to seeing him on Nick Fish. Not that I have to do anything to record the show. My TIVO already knows I have to watch...the show'll be there when we're ready to watch tomorrow morning. When we feel like it. Thanks to TIVO.
(What does it take to get an endorsement contract here?)

Thanks for the plug, Jack.
I hope WB moves the show to a later time slot in 2006--for the benefit of the non-TIVO crowd.
Sam was a gracious guest.
He made news on a number of fronts. He is not sold on a city take-over of PGE. He likes Saltzman's idea to tax cell phones and use the revenue to fund schools. He is also open to an extension of the I-tax and some additional property tax increase. He thinks he has 3 votes the third time around to pass an ordinance requiring lobbyists to register. (He is not a fan of the Leonard alternative.) He prefers a strong mayor form of government (even though it will put him out of a job), but would consider a city-manager alternative.
It was almost surreal interviewing Sam. We spent a year debating each other. The more passive and less adversarial role of interviewer was a big shift.
I wish all my guests answered tough questions as directly as he did.
I asked Sam if the "Tram" Adams nickname bothered him. He said is goes with the territory. (His favorite website, by the way, is Blue Oregon.)
Happy Holidays.
Nick

Sam was a gracious guest.
Best line: "Are you gonna make me cry?" when the show moved to the question/answer at the end. Sam's genuinely funny...and genuine.
