Milestone

This blog is fast closing in on 500,000 unique visits, but the odometer is likely to turn over while I'm asleep. If you scroll down toward the bottom of the sidebar on the main page, to the little SiteMeter box; and if it happens to say "500,000" exactly, and you e-mail me a screenshot of it, I'll buy you a ticket to Pulse ($45 value).

UPDATE, 4:18 p.m.: We had not one but two readers who sent along the 500K images. Bill McDonald just saved the meter box itself as a picture:

Michael was also on at the time, and he had an entire screenshot for us. Here it is:

That's two Pulse tickets, or two $45 contributions in their names. Thanks, guys!

We racked up 100,000 unique visits in the last 90 days. At that pace, we'd have our one millionth unique visit here on Dec. 30, 2006. We'll see.

I'm not seeing your SiteMeter, Jack.

I can't find it either, sorry.

It's to the left of the picture of the Mayor as Zorro. 499,981 and counting!

It's waaaayyyyy at the bottom. Alas, at 7:33am Portland time, it read 500,018. Congratulations, Jack! Projection for the date of 1,000,000?

p.s.: On my work PC, I couldn't see the counter with Firefox (just an error message), but it is there in IE, along with the "Last 10 songs played" box. I also get it with my personal iBook running Opera. Go figure.

Ah, it was b/c of Firefox. I see it now in IE, but now the moment has passed.

FWIW Safari can't see the counter either.

I was here at 499,990 this morning. I was sorely tempted to just reset my browser/erase cookies and keep refreshing until it hit 500,000, but I resisted. Congrats, Jack.

FWIW Safari can't see the counter either.

I'm on Safari (at work use OS X.4, at home OS X.3), and can see it.

Refreshing wouldn't have jacked up the counter. SiteMeter keeps track of your IP address, and won't count you as a new visit unless you go away and come back later.

'I'm on Safari (at work use OS X.4, at home OS X.3), and can see it.'

Right. It's me.

Just a question--how is it possible that two different readers got the 500,000 page view? Shouldn't that be impossible?

I thought about that. I'm sure it happened, because neither of these guys would make it up.

But I think it can happen. When a reader hits the "refresh" button, it doesn't count him or her as a new visit. But it does update the counter, which would reflect any additional visitors who arrived since the time the first reader got there. Thus, they would both show the same number.

At least, that's my best guess...
