Sit back, relax and enjoy your flight
Boy, am I glad I don't have tickets on Northwest Airlines, now or any time soon. "Don't worry, we've got replacement mechanics, whom we just hired, doing the maintenance on your plane." Uh huh. It will take months after the strike to get me on one of those birds.

My papa is flying NW from MN to PDX in two weeks. He had kept an eye on this for quite a while, thinking it was going to put the kibosh on his travel plans. No such problem. The talk around MN is that NW was hoping the mechanics would go on strike, because NW has been wanting to contract out the maintenance on their planes but couldn't do it as long as the union was still in place.

It's not unique to Northwest though.

They've been outsourcing airplane maintenance to other countries for a while now. On the brightside, I'm sure the FAA has set up a field office in San Salvador to keep an eye on certifications and logs and such.
