The building housing the Northeast Portland YMCA on Broadway in the Hollywood district is being sold, and it will be preserved as a recreation facility, according to news reports. Dan Dolan, a member of the Y and president of A-Boy Supply, will reportedly buy the building and lease it to a new nonprofit group formed by other members. Apparently the Y board approved the deal earlier today.
Nice move, Mr. Dolan. Congratulations to the Hollywood fitness enthusiasts and their families. Big-time raspberries to the Y.

If the Dolan family bought it, then the Y users should thank the taxpayers of Tigard for being so generous.

The YMCA that sold the Hollywood Y is not the same organization that built it. The YMCA of Columbia-Willamette has degenerated in to a cynical corporation that in the words of Oscar Wilde "... know the price of everything, but the value of nothing". The community that treasured a neighborhood landmark enough to take on the risk of trying to preserve and restore are far richer then the pathetic 'suits' who sold it off so that they may shore up their sinking organization for a few more months. I wish the 'former members of the Hollywood Y' much success in their endeavor and applaude their faith. The Y's CEO, Bob Hall, and his Board of Directors could learn a thing or two from them about how to really build a strong community.
