Those wonderful lawyers and judges

The folks at law.com had an extensive roundup the other day of current stories about some not-so-distinguished members of my noble profession. I've been running a good-looking law prof contest -- maybe a sleaziest lawyer competition would make more sense.

How about the local attorney offering the "slave trauma" defense in his client's murder trial (accused of breaking his two-year old son's neck after repeated beatings)?

Zealous advocacy should not be stretched into offering theories that persons are not responsible for their criminal behavior due to the mistreatment of their great-great-great-grandparents.

The "battered woman" defense is tough enough to swallow, but the "battered ancestor" defense shouldn't see the light of day.
