Here's the spirit of Portland: When somebody's trashing your neighborhood, you do what it takes to get him to stop. Kudos to Steve Schaeffer and David Munson, who prove that this is a great town, despite local government.

Posted by: Eric at August 3, 2006 06:07 AMA big spot for continual dumping is the 55th street (?) I-84 on ramp (westbound) off NE Glisan. The ramp travels under I-84 before it merges and people dump there continually. Makes me sick. Metro picks up the trash about once a month and the next day there's a bunch of garbage bags there.
Posted by: Chris McMullen at August 3, 2006 09:31 AMI say kudos to the cops for workin it. Thanks for providing an example of the value of citizen involvement. The earth is our living room. Think about that the next time you consider trashing it. Even with a tiny bit of trash - say a cigarette butt. I know it's gross, but I indulge in the vice, and when an ashtray aint convenient, it goes back in the pack, or my pocket. Why on earth would I toss a butt on my living room floor?
Posted by: genop at August 3, 2006 09:59 AMWhy i dont; get is if the guy was goign to thta much trouble to get rid of his grabage without having to pay monthly service, why not just find a dumpster on his route somewhere?
Posted by: Eric at August 3, 2006 10:12 AMI was waiting for some mention of Tonya. What -- there is garbage and the Dockside but no ice princess involvement?
Posted by: ellie at August 3, 2006 11:49 AMI think we should all be much more culturaly sensitive in this matter. I have been to countries on this continent (which will remain unnamed) where dumping your trash anywhere is perfectly customary. Imagine some of the most beautiful beaches in the world littered with dirty diapers, syringes and all other forms of fowl waste. We oregonians have a tizzy over a cig butt.
What we need is a government program aimed at educating our "undocumented" citizens. Maybe we could bring back that crying indian guy but have him speak spanish
Posted by: ace at August 3, 2006 09:28 PMVery Cool: way to go guys.
I just wish the City Council would give these guys a badge and a videocamera, and fire the "neighborhood dumping inspectors" that work banker's hours.
