I feel so European around here.

JK: Yeah complete with high unemployment, slow economic growth, high taxes and massive government spending.
Thanks
JK
Gee, I wish Portland had the "excitement" of Phoenix, home of the world's largest outdoor jail... oooh... the sights... oooh... the smells.... oooh... the NONSENSE!
Again, if Ptown so bad, why is everyone and their mother-in-law moving here from... San Francisco... another town mentioned in the blog.
HIstory is fun, when it ain't so boring and worthless.
home of the world's largest outdoor jail
Trust me, it's WAY overrated.

Because posers need a place to live?
Anyhow, by one recent report, the population within the city limits was level or declining.
Posted by: Jack Bog at May 30, 2006 11:21 AMI think this one might be the winner.
I dunno. Seems like another poor response by a retired public safety officer to what appears to be a legitimate law enforcement investigation.
Posted by: Jack Bog at May 30, 2006 11:28 AMAh yes, robust Denver.

Posted by: Libertas at May 30, 2006 12:06 PMWhatever has happened to the other cities mentioned in that quotation over the last 40 years, it's clear that nothing has changed in Portland.

True. Portland was a nicer place to live than those places then, and it still is.
Posted by: Scott at May 30, 2006 12:34 PMIsn't Denver the town that voted for TABOR (Taxpayers Bill of Rights) and when their state started closing down schools, cop shops and hospitals, the citizens finally figured out taxes were not a bad thing?
Yup, same town, same clueless denizens, and guess what? They're moving to Portland too! Like the folks in Seattle where less than half of the city sends their kids to public schools.
Here in Portland, we send 85% to public school.
Posted by: daphne at May 30, 2006 12:43 PMwe send 85% to public school.
Is that an accurate number? If it is, it won't be for long.
Not to mention all the people with school-age kids who are moving out of the city. That helps your percentage, but the number of students is clearly dropping, and fast.
Posted by: Jack Bog at May 30, 2006 12:46 PMWell, there's always cosmopolitan Seattle or San Francisco if you can't stand the sheer awesomeness of Phoenix or Denver. You guys would obviously love it in either place. But wait—doesn't San Francisco have light rail? Forget it.
I am, as is often the case, a little confused as to what y'all want.
Posted by: Libertas at May 30, 2006 01:52 PMEurope: "high taxes and massive government spending"
Not to mention the socialist blight of health care, government pensions, public transportation, free higher education and public support for the arts. Move along, folks, nothing to see there.
And not to mention the fact that FINLAND, of all places—part of evil, socialistic Scandinavia—is rated by some to be the most competitive economy in the world. How do they do it without Halliburton or PGE?
