Phrase of the Day

A wonderful wisecrack from Robert Ted Hinds, one of several folks challenging for one of the Portland City Council seats in the May primary:

"Sten-cell research"

After reading this joker's illiterate web site, I'll vote for the guy with the degree in English from Stanford, thankyouverymuch...

THANK YOU, THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I'LL BE HERE ALL NIGHT... THROUGH MAY 16.

ANYBODY WANT TO TEACH ERIK HOW TO USE THE OXFORD COMMA, WHILE WE'RE ON THE SUBJECT OF PROPER ENGLISH?

OH, I GUESS THAT IS STANFORD ELITISM FOR YOU. DON'T BE OFFENDED STATE-PAC-10 ALUMS, I'VE WORKED ALONGSIDE MANY AN SJSU OR SFSU OR LIKEWISE THAT HAS LEFT THE STANFORDITES IN THE DUST. MY MESSAGE FOR STEN IS THE SAME AS GEORGE CLOONEY'S MESSAGE TO BILL O'REILLY... I WILL DEBATE YOU ANY TIME, ANY PLACE.

OR AS THE MC5 SAID AT THE '68 RALLY IN CHICAGO, "IT'S TIME TO KICK OUT THE JAMS............!"

Please, easy on the caps lock key.

A Stanford grad might notice their own text scrolling across the screen in ALL CAPS.

His/her.

Hey, I'm a Stanford grad. And I wouldn't let the English majors run my $2 billion-a-year business.

If he's still a Blastocyst, it's not too late for an abortion, right?

If he wins reelection, he will have spent more of his adult working for the City of Portland than not. Doesn't that scare any of the rest of you. You remember that old line about power/corruption/absolutely.

PULL THE PLUG: it's time for Erik to feel the sting of public accountability.

"Adult" should read "adult life"...not adult movie career!

Eeeew! Very ugly naked gap-toothed visual...Sorry for that...Now I won't be able to fall asleep.

Assuming Sten's is 38 (per Brainstorm NW he was born in 1967), and he started working for Gretchen Kafoury's campaign in 1990...Then he's been on the public dole for 42% of his existence (16/38 = 42.1%), not half his "adult life".

If you just look at his time in elected office, then he's been a Public Servant for 12 out of 20 years (assuming 18 is "Adult"), or 60% of his adult life.

But he's not done yet. He needs 16 years on the City Council to really get the job done. Plenty of real world experience on the City Council. What could go wrong?

Maybe Earl will decide to pack it in and Erik can follow in Earl's footsteps (again). Better yet, OSPIRG or Habitat for Humanity could make him a job offer.

He could go door to door pestering people about disconnecting their downspouts.

Jack, I hope I never incur your wrath - your Photoshop skills are to be revered and feared...!

Once Hinds gave me the phrase, it was pretty obvious.

Dude, you got way too much time on your hands....

Excellent STENography. Nice STENcil, too. Thanks for driving the hits to my site. Sorry about the caps. Please continue the research. If you can isolate the gap tooth chromosome, you'll be famous. I think the tendency to continually underestimate the cost of projects by 400-500% isn't a biological problem, however. I think its a social psychology problem that seems prevalent among career politicians.

And just for the record, the Sten-cell comment was in reference to what I would do differently, instead of amending the City Charter to allow an income tax. I hate to see the school funding issue has come to this, but my alternative was a bond issue to keep the schools running for two years. That bond would include funding for a comprehensive study (as opposed to PGE-style Sten-cell research...snicker, chuckle) AND overhaul of the current school funding situation involving all stakeholders and putting every politician's head on the block come next election if funding runs out again. That's not an ideal solution, but I think it's better than opening the Pandora's Box of a city income tax.
