Time to start collecting for our Sam Rand scrapbook
We're just a little more than five months away from the end of the Adams "administration" at Portland City Hall. In 160 days, the Admiral will be sitting up at night cackling over his multiple pensions, and the mayor will be preparing his lectures at the Portland State Patronage Center. We need to give the two of them a good long sendoff, and so that it doesn't get lost in the holidays, we're thinking of dedicating the first couple of weeks in December to farewell festivities on this site.
It's never too early to start planning, and so we urge readers to begin helping us put together a fitting tribute. For one thing, we'll have to assemble lists of their accomplishments, and highlights of their City Council careers. What are your favorite moments with the Sam Rand Twins? There's a lot to think about -- eight years of the mayor and 10 years of the Fireman. They've done so much to make our city what it is today. Ideas? We're all ears.

Oh, that should be obvious. Sam's crowing about how he's put Portland on the map because of his bit appearance in Portlandia should be at the top of the list, of course. Every public official ALWAYS judges himself on how many times he appeared on television, and Sam knows that he's hit the big time based on the number of people in other cities who see him and laugh. It's when they point while doing so that gives him problems.
I actually started to make a list but seriously, I just don't have that kind of time today. God, what an unmitigated disaster these years have been. These last few months just can't go by fast enough.
I simply can't face it...Sorry...
With the prospect of either Char-LIE or Jeffy-poo as the "new" mayor, it is like trying to differentiate between WWI and WWII. We can look forward to 4 MORE years of Homer and the Goldschmidts pulling the strings.
For Randy, it is the "I would do it all over again today" comment about his many illegal water bureau projects.
For Adams... man, it is hard to choose. In terms of revealing his true character, it would probably be his vicious character attacks on Bob Ball for revealing the Breedlove story, which of course ended up being true.
In terms of his general stewardship, I think it would be claiming imaginary "cost savings" on one project and funneling the money into bike improvements. Also, his personal bankruptcy and not paying the mortgage on his rental property are instructive on the general financial acumen he brings to City Hall.
"For Randy, it is the "I would do it all over again today"
My favorite, "The more people don't like it, the more I want to do it." In addition to being reactionary, it sounds like a petulant 12-year old.
For both, I'd like to credit them with accelerating the debt clock at an obscene rate - Future generations will give thanks in their own form.
Randy does get the edge for being able to screw taxpayers out of two good pension payments.
The best I can credit Sam with is the "worst smear" of a gay man quote when he lied about someone telling the truth in order to get elected.
As far as scrapbook pictures, the top two:
- The one where he is trying to hug Lavonde-Griffith at her coming in party and she has a stunned "ooh-ick" look
- The one where he is climbing up on a burning roof in celebration of his fading masculinity that was never there anyways.
The picture of Randy being fluffed by the Paulsons, father and son, at some sporting event back East which was undoubtedly part of an investigatory junket designed to win Paulson jr the stadium deal.
Referring to something that time wise could not take place until a year or more down the road; just the other day Sammyboy made a comment to the effect of that it won’t take place until I leave office and “retire”. With 20 years at City Hall and half of his PERS pension going to an ex-partner, is retirement possible? Besides, Sammyboy is a controller wanting to control the everyday life of other people. It seems doubtful he will completely check out of public policy making.

Shouldn't that be, the Sam Rand Crapbook?

Not sure how to characterize this, but if not for the compost/garbage plan, we never would have been introduced to Stenchy!
