It appears that their petition drive to stop the Tigard-Portland MAX train boondoggle fell short by fewer than 50 signatures. You can bet the powers that be went over those petitions with a fine-toothed comb. Oh, well -- there's no money for more trains at the moment, and the opponents can always come back next year.

Can a count and verification of each signature instead of a formulary-small sample count be requested?
To have 34% of signatures invalidated because of a small sample is beyond norm. Could it be another means of controlling the citizen initiative process in favor of a political agenda? It is only to ask for a vote. What are they scared of? Maybe the Tigard City Council will vote to put it on the ballot.
There was no sampling used. All of the signatures were checked.
Any initiative requiring less than 4500 signatures requires all signatures to be verified.
thanks Mom for the clarification. How are the Sherwood and Tualatin right-to-vote initiatives doing? Having three cities voting this election cycle will help give direction.
It'll be great for Tigard's leaders and visionaries to explain that "We've got this great, shiny new train...
...but, everyone in Tigard wants to go to Washington Square, Bridgeport Village, Kruse Way, Murrayhill, PCC Sylvania, the high school and Tualatin - and not only does MAX not serve any of those, but we'll have to cut the bus service that does serve those locations.
I hope Tigard has plans to widen Walnut, Tigard, Greenburg and Hall Boulevards in the near future, to five lanes. Each. As well as 72nd Avenue, and Durham Road.
Signature mismatch is cinch.
Find some cancelled checks that are a few years old. Has your signature changed? How long has it been since you registered to vote?
Gee -- too bad the sig's don't match. You say it was really you? Doesn't matter, the person isn't important, the signature is.
"Signature mismatch is cinch. "
JK---I'd guess that is minor problem. How often are ballots stopped for signature mismatch?
The big problems are out of district and not registered.
It is amazing how many people think they are registered and aren't.
In addition to many people not knowing they are out of the city limits, there is the problem of people not paying attention. After a careful explanation that they must live in the city, some still sign and some even put down a completely different city!
With a 100% checking, the petitioners should be able to get a list of every reject and the reason for it. They may be able to correct some problems.
How on Earth does somebody not know if they live in Tigard or not? Or if they're registered to vote or not, which in Oregon means they wouldn't be getting ballots mailed to them. Maybe the signature gatherers weren't explaining the requirements to everybody.

How on Earth does somebody not know if they live in Tigard or not? Or if they're registered to vote or not, which in Oregon means they wouldn't be getting ballots mailed to them. Maybe the signature gatherers weren't explaining the requirements to everybody.
