Old Shep, I think you have the right idea. I have a feeling that before too long, Portland is going to look like that abandoned Six Flags park outside of New Orleans. Lots of flashy toys, all above the waterline when the flood came through, but nothing works and everything is overgrown and unusable.
I was a bit surprised and dismayed to see numerous Jefferson Smith lawn signs along SE 17th Ave the other day. After Sam Adams, you'd hope people would know better...
I'm seeing so many Jefferson Smith signs I'm starting to wonder if the property owners voluntarily put them there, we're paid to put them there, or even know or care about them. Seems a little odd to me from a statistical point of view.
In addition to the eruption along Taylors Ferry Road I reported the other day, there is also an irruption of Smith signs along SW Multnomah Boulevard from the Wash Co line eastwards to about the 6100 block, plus one lonely one on Multnomah just west of SW 45th. Really odd.
By the placement its not at all clear if the signs are actually in the ROW or are placed on the property of the adjacent homeowners.
The Smith signs are popping up all over 'outer SE', especially along Foster and just north of Foster along 136th.I just figured Jeff was starting to open up his campaign wallet....
It's a Marv Albert expression to mean a great long shot in hoops. I also remember it with Downtown Freddy Brown of the Seattle Sonics.
In other words, it's a compliment. I'm starting to sense why you call yourself Mr. Grumpy.

BTW - It roughly follows 162nd (all kind of zigs and zags). Gresham and Portland got into some turf war about wanting prop tax revenues, but not wanting to provide adequate police.
Randy's endorsement gets you the backing of the Firefighters' Union (of which he used to be President), the Police Union, the Laborers' Union, and all of the other City worker unions. Then these people go out an put lawn signs up all over town even though most of them do not live in Portland (especially so with firefighters and police - just ask for a zip code list). The firefighters have plenty of time to do this since they work only about seven days a month. And, the others... well they have paid "breaks" all of the time. Then Portladers being a mostly nice, but politically gullable lot, elect the guy who has the most lawn signs. Then Jefferson Smith becomes Mayor, but knows who got him there... Randy Leonard and the City employee unions. Randy gets to keep on running town from behind the curtain and Jefferson Smith keeps giving the Peoples' resources away to the unions. And a few more years of this and Portland looks like Detroit. See: http://www.freep.com/article/20120405/NEWS01/204050561/Detroit-s-new-deal-state-lifts-threat-manager-now
x-portlander,
Unfortunately, good analysis. This is what I refer to as a choke-hold on the people of our city.
Randy picks Jefferson Smith, gives Novick an advance notice of his leaving to run, and round and round it goes and we know where it goes.
So as far as two peas in a pod, we can be sure the insiders will always want three peas in that pod they can count on and that shouldn't be too difficult.
The only way out of this is to vote for the citizens (not just those deemed viable and promoted by the insiders) who care for this city enough to run despite that choke-hold.
That's about the time I reserved my U-Haul three years ago, right after I voted against Sam Adams.
I enjoy living in a neighborhood minded community with great schools, great parks, great bike paths, safe crosswalks across streets, community theater a block away. If only we could kick out Metro and TriMet, then we'd be set.

Smith's signs are all over NE as well - 33rd Ave in particular. Brady is unknown, Hales scares me, but Smith is SamRand on roids.

I'd never tell a politician's door knocker "yes" jut to get them to go away..
I would tell em to "get off my lawn..." and see if they understand.

That apply for Novick too? I don't know if PERS can afford a bunch more of high-paid boot-lickers on the rolls.
