Songs of my people

According to the folks at Politico, the Obama campaign has released a playlist of music that will be piped in at re-election rallies, rope lines, and similar events from now until November:

"Different People" (No Doubt)
"Got to Get You in My Life" (Earth, Wind & Fire)
"Green Onions" (Booker T & The MG's)
"I Got You" (Wilco)
"Keep on Pushing" (The Impressions)
"Keep Reachin' Up" (Nicole Willis & the Soul Investigators)
"Love You I Do?" (Jennifer Hudson)
"No Nostalgia" (AgesAndAges)
"Raise Up" (Ledisi)
"Stand Up" (Sugarland)
"This" (Darius Rucker)
"We Used To Wait" (Arcade Fire)
"You've Got the Love" (Florence and the Machine)
"Your Smiling Face" (James Taylor)
"Roll with the Change" (REO Speedwagon)
"Everyday America" (Sugarland?)
"Learn to Live" (Darius Rucker)
"Let's Stay Together" (Al Green)
"Mr. Blue Sky" (Electric Light Orchestra)
"My Town" (Montgomery Gentry)
"The Best Thing about Me Is You" (Ricky Martin, featuring Joss Stone)
"You are the Best Thing" (Ray Lamontagne)
"Keep Marchin'" (Raphael Saadiq)
"Tonight's The Kind of Night" (Noah and the Whale)
"We Take Care of Our Own" (Bruce Springsteen)
"Keep Me In Mind" (Zac Brown Band)
"The Weight" (Aretha Franklin)
"Even Better Than The Real Thing" (U2)
"Home" (Dierks Bentley)

Ah, but you can see where this is going. They've left out a few songs:

"Where Did Our Love Go?" (The Supremes)
"Baby, You're a Rich Man" (The Beatles)
"Won't Get Fooled Again" (The Who)
"Would I Lie to You?" (The Eurythmics)
"Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothin'" (James Brown)

Readers, help us play DJ here.

Comments (40)

More James Brown

Papa's Got a Brand New Bag
The Payback
If I ruled the World
Give It Up or Turnit a Loose

Finally (even though I think Obama will trumps the fools of the R-brand):

Cold Sweat

Didn't someone do a song called - "Is That All There Is?"

One more minor James Brown, I forgot:

"Funky President (People It's Bad)"

Burning Down The House - Talking Heads

The thrill is gone-BB King

I Got You Under My Skin
Smoke Gets In Your Eyes
The Impossible Dream
Because Your Mine
Call Me Irresponsible
Don't Let It Go To Your Head
Nobody Else But Me
Street Of Dreams
Blue Turning Gray Over You

etc

Charade.

From the Moody Blues:

Ride My See Saw
Legend Of A Mind
Voices In The Sky

More Jerome Kern:

Why Was I Born
They Didn't Believe Me
Look For The Silver Lining
Can I forget You

It escaped me at the time, but I just yesterday realized that the song Itzak Perlman and Yo Yo Ma performed at Obama's inauguration, Will The Circle Be Unbroken, is all about the narrator's grief over burying his mother; Obama's grandmother had passed away just hours before election day and I wonder if the selection of such a bittersweet song wasn't meant to enlarge upon both the personal and public aspect of day. In any case, whatever else one could say about Obama he's a terrific campaigner and music is definitely a place where he and his supporters like to come together.

"Paint the White House Black" by Parliament Funkadelic

Don't Worry, Be Happy (or Else)

“Highway to Hell” (AC/DC)
“Hungry Like the Wolf” (Duran. Duran)
“Runnin' With the Devil” (Van Halen)
"Lyin Eyes" (The Eagles)
“Sweet Dreams Are Made of This”(Eurythmics)

My head is going to explode...must rest now.

How about Hawkwind's "Uncle Sam's On Mars"?

"In the Year 2525" by Zager and Evans

Widely considered to be the worst song to ever reach the top of the charts.

Thoroughly unlistenable litany of fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

Draw your own conclusions.

Cool Jerk

"We Americans" (The Briefs)
"Peace Attack" (Sonic Youth)
"Justify My Thug" (Jay-Z)
"Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams" (Preservation Hall & Duke Dejan)
"Slap Them Up" (KRS-ONE)

Them or Us - Frank Zappa

Nothin's Real Anymore - Shel Silverstein

AND MY FAVORITE:

Strong as Sampson - Procol Harem

"Psychiatrists and lawyers...destroying mankind
Drivin` `em crazy...and stealing `em blind
Bankers and brokers...ruling the world
Storing the silver...and hoarding the gold"

Just as relevant today, if not more so...

"Leave Me Alone." Butthole Surfers
"Mr. Cancelled," the Cows
"Cranky Messiah," Melvins
"Laughing with Lucifer at Satan's Sideshow," Melvins

Broke Mitch Woods

"Do You Believe In Magic?" (Lovin'Spoonful)
"Dust In The Wind" (Kansas)
"Little Lies" (Fleetwood Mac)
"Goodbye Cruel World" (James Darren)
"Still Got The Blues" (Gary Moore)
"Last Dance" (Donna Summer)
"Don't Cry Outloud" (Melissa Manchester)
"You Don't Own Me" (The Blow Monkeys)
"I Will Remember You" (Sarah McLachlan)
"He'll Have To Go" (Jim Reeves)
"Beat It" (Michael Jackson)
"Charade" (Henry Mancini)
"I Can See Clearly Now" (Johnny Nash)

Stayin' Alive
Eve of Destruction

And of course, Tower of Power's, "There's Only So Much Oil in the Ground."

"Balls to the Wall" Accept

Any audio recording of Marcel Merceau.

John Cage's 4"31'

crickets.....

"Dirty Water" by Buddy and Julie Miller:

Well I don't need you hanging round my door
Trying to drag me back down to the shore
And I ain't gonna drink your dirty water no more

Well I got wet from my head down to my legs
And I drank dirty water down to the dregs
But I won't do it again I don't care who begs

Dirty water now what's that for
Dirty water I ain't drinking no more

You've got a lie underneath your tongue where it can't be seen
And you wanna put the truth on a guillotine
But you might as well put out a fire with gasoline

Well you can serve up dirty water from a golden cup
You can try to lock up the truth but the door won't shut
Cause the truth just comes out like blood from a cut

Well it sparkles and it shines but it's just a trick
So you wash it down with a kiss just to get a kick
Well that dirty water is about to make me sick

How about, for either party, "Horse with no Name" by America.

Lies Lies Lies - Naked Eyes

Little Lies - Fleetwood Mac

"The Entertainer," from the film "The Sting," would be appropriate.

If you wanna be happy - Jimmy Soul

BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD - For What It's Worth (1967)
Stop, hey what's that sound...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RcG4RqpNwU&feature=related

"The Screw" - Phil Spector/The Crystals

I Pity The Fool, Bobby Blue Bland:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-dGSegQOsc&feature=related

Other Blues by Little Milton:
Grits Ain't Groceries
Feel so Bad
If Walls Could Talk
I Wake Up Crying

Promises Promises- Naked Eyes

"you made me promises, promises, you knew you'd never keep"

""Balls to the Wall" Accept"

Dang it you stole mine.

Whenever i hear about taxation and what not I hear Aerosmith's "Eat the Rich" in my hind brain. Also "Cryin'" off that same album is appropriate.

"Rainbow Stew" - Merle Haggard

Could also be on the playlist of several Portland mayoral candidates. :)

"Backdoor man" - Allman Brothers
"Liar, Liar" - Never shout never
"Liar" - Three Dog Night
"Beautiful Liar" - Beyonce & Shakira
"Stupid Liar" - Big Bang
"White Liar" - Miranda Lambert
"Damn Liar" - Chely Wright
"Fantasy" - Mariah Carey
"Fantasy" - Earth, Wind & Fire
"Faker" - Miike Snow
"Road to Hell" - Chris Rea

The lint in my navel would have done more the country in the last 3+ years than big ears has done.

"Love Me Tender" (Elvis)
"All I have to do is Dream" (Everly Bros)

When the world is running down, you make the best of what's still around ~ The Police
Live at Rockpalast, Essen (Grugahalle), Germany (1980.10.18)
