Gingrich will probably answer with a question, "Isn't that like asking a parent which child to sacrifice when only one can be saved? The question should be...."
That might catch Perry offguard, but I think that most of them would have come up with something like:
"Presidential authority is defined by the Constitution, so my guide to exercising it would have to be based on the Constitution. Having said that, I don't find any direct conflict between the Constitution and the Bible because they serve different purposes. Even so, it is worth noting that the Constitution was authored by men of Christian faith....yada, yada, yada."
PanchoPDX, you've inadvertently picked up on something that's remarkably ignored outside of Texas. Namely, Perry would choke because he's not used to being asked hard questions, in a debate or anywhere else. (Over the last three elections he's had, where he actually had to campaign, he's conveniently skipped out on any debate with his opponents. Oh, he'll make a lot of noise about how he wants to debate, but only if said opponents agree to a list of idiotic requirements as long as your arm. When they say no, he runs and hides: the only reason he's debating now is because he doesn't have a choice. That is, if you call that "debating".)
First off the Mormons revere the bible, they just have other books as well. So no bias against the Mormons really.
Secondly we know every single one of them will choose the bible. Then probably say something about how the constitution is based on the bible bla bla bla...
Really not that great of a question. Too predictable.
I am a bit confused by Poncho's comment about liberal bigotry. These guys talk about the bible and the constitution all the time. I guess liberals do harp on that old separation of church and state thing...perhaps that's bigoted?

Yesssss.
And I wonder which answer would play best with their constituents.

Perry. Well it wouldn't be that Koran, like Obama picked.
Posted by Bark Munster | October 12, 2011 11:49 AM
Bark Munster....if you're referring to the Inauguration Ceremony, Barack Obama chose to place his hand on the Bible that belonged to Lincoln.
Good try though in restarting that old email chainletter rumor.

And I agree the question is a brilliant one I'd love to see asked of all candidates regardless of Party.

msmelharmon. Nope, no restarting. Somehow, putting one's hand on any work of fiction doesn't impress.

And that, my friends, is the difference between a libertarian and a social conservative.

I know somebody else that really didn't face a lot of media scrutiny in the 2008 election.

Here is another elected official who has little regard for the US Constitution.
http://dailycaller.com/2011/10/12/jackson-obama-should-declare-a-national-emergency-add-jobs-with-extra-constitutional-action/
Unfortunately, most of our elected officials (Rs and Ds) have very little regard for the document.
