More on opening Lake O. to the public

Our post of the other day about the possibility of allowing everyone access to the waters of Oswego Lake was followed a few days later by this op-ed piece in the local paper down there. Apparently some people in city government actually want it. Oh, the drama ahead.

50 years ago there was some access. A public swimming area was located at the junction of McVey Ave and Rt 43. There are apartments there now that totally block any public view or access to the lake. Those were built about 40 years ago I think.
I think there was also some access next to the railroad tracks on State street. There is a small cement park there now.

Who in local government wants public access to the lake? I thought The Lake Corp. (owners' assn. for the lake) was off limits to any governmental tampering. And why would the arrangement change now? The current Mayor and Council have not been exactly populist of late. Could it be another push to change LO in preparation of New Urbanism and the desires of Williams, Dame & White? It all makes sense now. Back-room deals and promises have to be honored - after all, we do want our leaders to have integrity!
