Dear Portland:
This year we are instituting "Snow Day." Residents who get their streets ploughed will pay a fee of $15 for each time snow is removed.
Residents can opt-out by clearing the street in front of their houses and melting the snow in their own Snowfall Melting Bin. For those who opt-out, a senior city engineer will verify that the street has been cleared of snow. If the snow has not been cleared, residents will be assessed an administrative fee.
Love ya'
Sam Adams

Please don't roll out the lady from the bike coalition to tell us that snow and ice are slippy and you might fall on your bike if you try to ride in the snow. That was just embarrassing.

It would be more likely that they charge you the $15 for blocking you in. The last year we had a big snow event they plowed the main streets but left ~5' berms of snow across the side streets blocking anybody from getting on to the main streets that didn't want to/couldn't ram their way through. A number of vehicles got high-centered on them trying to return home. (They left before the plowing and couldn't get home.)
Yeah, that really helps a lot doesn't it.

Two? I didn't know they kept that many.
When we had the last big snow-in a couple of years ago and for the first time in my 30 years here the city did nothing for at least a week, didn't one of the local stations or papers do a story about the situation and the resulting lock-down and how the city had sold 90% of its plows and sand trucks because they had studies that said they wouldn't need them anymore due to global warming, or some such nonsense?
Gotta love living in the Smart City®.

Here's hoping Tom Miller wears some sort of doofy hat to rival Creepy's past head gear.

Didn't you mean they were going to snowcase their winter storm preparedness?
Posted by Sally | October 11, 2011 10:45 AM
They actually have a lot more than two snowplows.
It's just that the others will be busy in the West Hills and Dunthorpe and certain portions of Northwest and won't be available for use in the other 99 percent of the city.
Besides, you shouldn't be driving a car anyway. Snow or not.

"Snow or not".
Really? Since when? That sounds like west coast weather weenie talk. We're not talking a Fairbanks blizzard here, just a stupid foot or less of snow. It's ridiculous how after decades of clearing streets and byways this place has decided it's better if its residents just stay indoors and don't try to go anywhere.
And besides, I seem to remember seeing about one bus per day during the last snow-in and even MAX was shut down because it can't run when the rails get too cold or some other crazy reason. Trains in Europe run through the Alps in deep snow. On top of that MAX also can't run when the rails get too hot.
More misplaced priorities.

Face it folks - Portland is PATHETIC when it comes to snow removal. Even more insulting is the simple fact that it snows enough several times each winter to require the use of snow plows on the streets. Someone needs to tell Sam and Randy that no matter what the global warming people say - it will likely snow again in Portland 2-4 times this winter.
Maybe these idiots could take a clue from the Reno Metro area where virtually all the freeways and major streets are plowed by 6-7:00 A.M. on mornings when it snows.
Posted by Dave A. | October 11, 2011 12:39 PM
Portland used to do that.
Posted by Mr. Grumpy | October 11, 2011 1:09 PM
I'd be happy to clear the snow in front of my place....have rock salt will travel.
But wait, I don't live in Portland anymore.....nevermind....

Don't forget the three snow shovels (each with an attending crew of 3-7 City employees) and the seven ice scrapers.

Jack I assume you are also refreshing up your graphics for Snowpocalypse?
