Then coming on hard with their beanbag gun with live rounds in it.
Who trains these guys?
Oh wait -- I remember -- it's people like John Minnis. Another one of Portland's finest. That explains some things.
The latest screwup will wind up costing the taxpayers seven figures. We'd suggest that a grand jury be convened, but since there's no real district attorney in Portland on matters like this, it's not even worth it. At times, we're ashamed to say we live here.
Back in my Army SF days, my unit regularly provided surgical MOUT/advanced urban combat training to civilian law enforcement (SWAT Teams), and we messed around with beanbag rounds on occasion. I cannot believe that anyone who has previously used these rounds can visually mistake live rounds for beanbags rounds. Furthermore, these rounds make very little noise (compared to a live buckshot round) and have NO recoil – the cop fired four times; he should have noticed the recoil of the first round and known at that point he wasn't loaded with beanbags. I can't see how he could have fired more than one round without immediately knowing something wasn't right with his "beanbag gun".
But then again, many of the cops we had to deal with were less than professional, and acted as if they had seen too many Rambo movies; frankly, they were too gung-ho for their own good, and for the public good. We were less than impressed with most of them. This sort of macho-fueled incompetence isn't just a Portland thing – it's nationwide, I'm sorry to say. And since 9/11, it has gotten worse.
These so called "peace officers" seem to think they are fighting hand to hand combat in Kabul. The militarization of police officers is a nationwide problem.
Lots of problems with this one, but this ride along thing bugs me and always has. If being a cop is so dangerous why let teenagers ride along? Seems like a hell of a risk to me. Lets wish this young man well and hope that charges are coming next for the PPB.
If there was some equipment clerk they could fire for the mis-loaded beanbag gun, he or she'd be gone. But the responsibility here is clearly with the officer who fired four times before realizing that he was shooting lethal ammunition. Officers are never prosecuted in Portland -- and they're hardly ever disciplined seriously.
Did they drug test the officer who shot? If ever there was cause for a pee cup, this case presented it. But don't tell me -- the new drug test policy tests only randomly, not for cause?
Bah, drug tests. Those are only for the little people, not cops. Remember, only the cops should be the ones with firearms because they're like all about safety n' stuff.
The district attorneys office is too scared lazy and afraid to prosecute cops when they break the law.under schrunk cops have been getting very preferrential treatment numerous times overth years when they have committed blatant illegal acts like Mike Garvey and the prostitution ring the central preccinct cops and the overtime scam Brian ossenkop having an opencontainer of alcohol in his police car on.thejob.if that was anyone but a cop we would have been cited handcuffed and throw in the back of a cop car.in each of the cases I mentioned above internal affairs invevestigated and suspended. The offices when they should have all been fired rprosecuted and give stern vulgar lectures to their faces by judges.
I have an idea how about regular drug screen and marijuana testing for all law enforcement officers?how do we know for sure whether these cops are or are not on anything illegal the way some of them with their hung ho attitudes scare harrass and intimidate us?especially when. They pick on us over petty anal things because they are bored scared and too too lazy to pick on the real criminals.
Did anyone else notice this statement "The wadding from the shotgun shell was found intact in the wound,"? How the hell close was the cop when he fired on this guy? I thought their whole guns mentality was they are too scared to come into contact. This kind of disproves that.
The cops on the beat and in the various outreach programs to neighborhoods are floating the rumor, made up by them, that there was only 1q lethal round and 3 beanbag rounds fired and that one beanbag round did not fire but misfired and was ejected unfired.
Thats the runor given to the folks in the South Portland Neighborhood Association.
I don't believe it, but I have no doubt that the cops could "find" 1 unfired beanbag round, three fired beanbag casings and one lethal round casing at the scene and turn those in after their "
investigation" on scene on Friday the 3oth.
Portland Police Chief Mike Reese and Mayor Sam Adams last week called the June 30 shooting by Officer Dane Reister a tragic mistake due to human error and issued a public apology to Monroe.

"The militarization of police officers is a nationwide problem."
I blame steroids. That, and a psycho complex that they are better than us.

"Don't Choke 'Em, Smoke 'Em" -- PPB thinks non-lethal is BS.
Posted by dg | July 8, 2011 11:34 PM
And once again, a mental health history. What is with the training, steroids, mentality, that ends with such often lethal violence?
Posted by dman | July 8, 2011 11:37 PM

Also how about more thorough complete ground checks on all these cops before any of them are hired?

If keeping Portland weird is the objective, it only follows that Portland's police are along for that ride.
