Now that he's taken over the police bureau (insert prayer here), Portland's creepy mayor has decided to expand his staff by yet two more positions -- a "director of public safety and peacekeeping" at up to $75,000 a year plus benefits, plus a "coordinator" to assist that director, at up to $50,000 a year plus benefits. I'm sure they'll both be people with good judgment, lots of relevant experience, and a truly independent mindset.
Mayor Sam Adams has interviewed former Assistant Police Chief Dorothy Elmore to be his liaison to the Police Bureau. The mayor took the bureau from Commissioner Dan Saltzman last month (see “Cop Out,” WW, May 19, 2010), and Elmore would be a controversial choice as his liaison. In 1997, her then-husband, Officer Vince Elmore, took out a restraining order on her, alleging she had slashed the tires on their car and threatened to kill him. He later lifted the order so Elmore could keep her job. Adams’ chief of staff, Tom Miller, declined to comment on a personnel issue, and Elmore didn’t return WW’s phone call.
So obviously we need to find out what Elmore has on Sam....
Since no one in the media is bothering to investigate anything at City Hall (of shame) there are no reporters that need to get bought off with these positions...
How many police staff would be saved with that same $125,000? I think I'd rather have one or two more beat cops than two paper shufflers helping Samadumbs oversee the bureau he selected.
As far as Sam taking back the PPB, he is simply a figure head. He has never had the knowledge nor the stomach for the job not to mention the respect of the bureau. Besides, its not "sexy" like bio swales, bikes and boys...
He should have just left Saltzman with the job and saved the taxpayers the $125,000.00
President Obama has ordered the sale of some 14,000 unused and 55,000 underused federal buildings which he figures will cut the budget about $3 billion.
If this is carried out in the tradition of city government property dumps, some developers are going to make big bucks out of this and the public will never have a clue.
I was really hoping it would be Roland Chlapowski: From here on out, Portland police officers will be armed with PowerPoint and a clip holding 300 slides.
George Anonymuncule Seldes: If this is carried out in the tradition of city government property dumps, some developers are going to make big bucks out of this and the public will never have a clue.

Is Saltzman losing staff because he no longer has PPB in his portfolio?
Posted by Nonny Mouse | June 12, 2010 12:47 PM
Does anyone know how many people are on this Mayor's staff as compared to the number on former Mayor's staff?
Where is the education and experience listed
of his staff members? I couldn't find that.
Maybe someone else knows where this information can be found.
I was able to find the staff education and experience for those working in the offices of the Commissioners.

Here is a recent O article that reports Sam's staff as twice that of Katz but slightly smaller than Potter's staff.

Sam needs to cut his staff and start doing his own work. The party circut is packing on the pounds.....

They also own toll roads, and who knows what else. This takes an investigative reporter to look into what may be left in our country that has not been sold. What next, the Golden Gate Bridge?
