Reader poll: Should Brandon Roy try to play on torn meniscus?
The news about Blazer Brandon Roy's knee is bad: He's got torn cartilage and needs surgery. He's talking about trying to play on it, though. It's playoff time and all, and they're saying there's no chance of it getting worse, but the prospect of his putting serious stress on the torn meniscus seems a little scary. What do you think?

Meniscus surgery is one of the most overutilized procedures in orthopedics. The evidence shows that it's not always necessary. If Brandon can go he may not be great, but he shouldn't be worse as a result of trying to play on it.
Absolutely not play. Any debris or additional tearing in this area could cause further injury. Best thing is to let it heal now with some physical therapy and strengthen during off-season.
yeah...sure, take that meniscus out lickety split! and then he can have a new knee before he Is 50!
Total knee replacement is a great! recreational activity!
I hope the money he is making now is worth it later on.
Well, I've wasted two trips to arthroscopy for torn meniscii and my knee is stil as sore as before the surgery. Tape It up, brace it well & let him play. It won't be any worse than if he has surgery.
I like how the Blazers play without Roy. More drives to the basket, more team play, more defense, more fast breaks or at least uptempo bringing the ball down the court before defensive setups, getting out of the set-play mentality, and more involvement of other players. Portland has talent beyond Roy. Let it explode. Great basketball.
I will not feel cheated a bit if they shut Brandon down. The Blazers are giving the fans a tremendous season. Marcus Camby's play tonight should live on in Blazer lore forever.
That is not to say we throw in the towel either.
We go on fighting with whomever we have left, same as all season. My favorite example was when Steve Blake came out of a hospital bed, and went right back into the fray. Not only did we immediately play him, we immediately counted on him and he delivered.
The Blazers showed tons of heart this year. What Marcus Camby did tonight moved me to the point where I had to go on a long walk after the game. Go Blazers!
It's surprising the Blazers have had a pretty good season despite losing their two big centers and two other key players. But there has never been much hope of them getting much beyond the fist or second playoff rounds. Kevin Durant instead of Oden would have put the Blazers closer to a championship. Portland has gone for the big man in most of their number one picks I can recall, and have been successful only once in three picks with the big man over the athlete. And even that time (Walton), the party only lasted a year.
I don't think Roy can last much beyond his 30th birthday in the NBA. Too much wear and tear on his body.
If he plays and the Blazers flame out in the first round, we'll argue whether or not he could have helped us win if he was 100%. If he doesn't play and we lose in the first round we'll subconsciously blame him for what most certainly know could have been had he played. There are no winners in this game.

If there is any risk of further damage, don't play. They won't make it past the first round unless they are really lucky anyways.
Besides it might be worth playing without Brandon. If they win, then we'll realize we can function as a team with Sir Roy.

I tell you what -- Marcus Camby wouldn't play with that injury. Could account for his professional longevity.
