On the itinerary

The New York Times' resident frugal traveler reports:

When I heard that Beau Breedlove, the former intern who at the age of 17 began an affair with Portland’s mayor, Sam Adams, was signing copies of Unzipped magazine, in which he appears 98 percent naked, I hurried to Fantasy, an adult store, dutifully bought the latest issue ($8.99; no sales tax in Oregon!) and stood in line for my autograph — a piece of history.

The Times infatuation with Portland--much like the city itself--just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

Let me guess, the pics were taken in Adams' office?

Who is BB's agent? Pretty savvy to get a plug in the NY Times, even if it's in a travel piece.

Adams' was 42 when he began his affair, isn't his autograph a piece of history too?

That explains why newspapers are failing. They hire too many fruitcakes.

Is there some kind of scavenger hunt prize for the person who can get Sam & Beau's autographs on the same object? Extra bonus for City Hall after hours sign-in sheets dated before June 2, 2005.

There's an Arthur Sulzberger on the staff of The Oregonian. I'm guessing he's related to the Sulzberger family that runs the New York Times. Probably was packed off to the sticks to learn the journalism trade for his eventual taking up of the reins of the Gray Lady.

Could help explain why the NYTimes devotes so much ink and pixels to our fair city.

I believe Sulzberger the Younger left the O and headed back east. Let's hope Merritt Paulson follows.

Now, why haven't you censored conspiracyzac posts? We all know you heavily censor posts, possibly this one too, but there is no reason for the homophobic comments.

PdxMark, if you are referring to the word "fruitcake" that conspiracyzac used in his last post, I didn't know that was homophobic. I have occasionally used that word since I was maybe five on the playground. I have used it like I might use "batty".

It's hard to know where to step so as not to inadvertantly offend, though we may try.

"Gay" didn't use to be a charged word, either. Remember the Gay Blade? "I feel pretty and witty and gay?" ala Maria in West Side Story? The Gay Caballero?

Times surely have changed. My sister, who was a Campfire Girl in the 1960s, told me that they used to have an official song that went (in part):

"As faggots are brought from the forest,
Firmly held by the sinews which bind them,
I will cleave to my Campfire sisters,
Whenever, wherever I find them . . ."

I imagine this one has fallen out of favor and, yes, I am old albeit openminded.
