Don't worry. This news of vote trading has "shaken Sam to his core". He is "more than willing to discuss the issue in a frank and open manner", and is "now working harder than ever to regain our trust".
sadly, this will be seen by local wonks and politicians as business as usual.
which is all Adams ever was, really--the usual. the vapid, carefully cultvated green-hip-chicken raising-bike commuting-all for education persona he crafted to get elected shrivels in the harsh light of day, for those paying attention.
good god, Sam. time to "work as if you were living in the early days of a better nation".
come to think of it, I'm particularly enjoying your opening lines of your campaign video (which begins with "Let's Get It On" playing in the background):
"You know, I've never seen a list of rules for making a campaign video; but if there is a list, I bet near the top, between maybe 'kiss plenty of babies' and 'keep all your clothes on' is 'don't start your video with a quote from a Scottish writer noone has ever heard of".
you're one for three so far, Sam.

At first you may think that a quid pro quo deal by Thursday to fund the Sellwood Bridge in exchange for the Convention Hotel, is a little rushed, but nothing could be farther than the truth.
Excuse me, I meant "farther from the truth."
The city council has actually been working on policies that support this deal for 20 years, and at long last, it is time to act.
Posted by Bill McDonald | April 21, 2009 6:55 PM
Slimey. The Sellwood Bridge is vital infrastructure. The convention center hotel is a playground for yuppies. City government should focus upon the basic, boring stuff -- at least, ideally.
Posted by chriswnw | April 21, 2009 6:56 PM
Anyone have an idea who gave Sam the Thursday ultimatum?

Exactly. You'd think they might take pride in having a low unemployment rate, good roads, good schools, sidewalks, etc. but I guess that's not what they're looking for.

A walking anti-Gay slur, hell-bent on confirming every stereotype. Dishonors the name of a real patriot. Please resign & spare us the expense of a recall (and take your foolish Fireman friend with you.)

Wow. Wheeler goes straight to the media. I admire his integrity, but it is now officially a knife fight between the City and County. If you thought it was getting ugly before....
Posted by Snards | April 21, 2009 7:46 PM
I'd much prefer the knife fight over business as usual. Someone needs to call out the City of Portland, and the county seems to be in the position to do it.

Can someone explain how TriMet has no problem getting funding for a brand-spanking-new bridge with no discernible benefits to drivers (let alone the public at large), but Multnomah County has to walk around hat-in-hand to get money to repair/replace a bridge with nearly a century of demonstrable benefits to the many Portlanders who drive.
Posted by Garage Wine | April 21, 2009 8:20 PM
SOMEBODY has to do it, it might as well be Wheeler and the County.

Whoever stands to make money from both projects moving forward, I would conject.

Paulson, and/or the developer mafia must have some good photos or video of sammy being sammy with another teen. Blackmail would certainly explain his urgent need to impart hundreds of millions on utter nonsense.
Posted by RANZ | April 21, 2009 8:52 PM
We're just one wiretap short of our Portland's own Private BlagoyaHO.
Your going down, Sammy. Not in a good way.
Posted by Mister Tee | April 21, 2009 8:53 PM
Something happened. Sam seemed rattled when he spoke to the media in front of city hall yesterday about the coliseum.
Posted by A Hopeful | April 21, 2009 8:57 PM
Wheeler should visit Salem and lobby for the return of the $200 Million that Sam stole from the state's lottery funds to help keep the Milwaukie Light Rail and it's no vehicle bridge alive. The legislature might have some sympathy since the Sellwood Bridge is a higher priority and Sam has little credence.

The Oregonian yesterday reported how the soccer deal leaves the city $30 million short, or $30 million more in hawk. And commissar Leonard and Scam Adams were reporting how this was a screaming deal for Portlanders shortly after it was announced only a few weeks ago. You would think portlanders would wake up one day, and realize the current cityhall crew is a screaming bad deal for them. One multi-million dollar blunder after another all the while the city auditor reports: "Nothing happening here. Just go back to sleep."
If Wheeler lives in the city of Portland proper, he could take down one of the current crew in one of the upcoming elections. This might help upset the current dysfunctional-cityhall-applecart.

Unbefffeenlievable.
How will Mayor's office spin this? Can't wait...
Posted by jimbo | April 21, 2009 9:16 PM
What is this guys problem? The Sellwood bridge is about to fall down and he won't support it unless he gets a vote from Wheeler for a useless Convention Center hotel. I truly had higher hopes for Adams, clearly I was wrong.
Posted by canucken | April 21, 2009 9:35 PM
I truly had higher hopes for Adams
You have no judgment at all.
Posted by Jack Bog | April 21, 2009 11:35 PM
Wow, gutsy of Wheeler to expose a deal making conversation like this! Talk about exposing the smoke filled room of politics. As someone else said above, now it will get ugly, though. Sam will not like being called out like this at all.
Posted by Dave J. | April 21, 2009 11:57 PM
It can't get any uglier. Teen sex scandal, stolen election, selling out the taxpayers for Hank Paulson, Hank Ashforth and the usual developer and construction suspects, a recall effort -- someone at the county calling him out actually pretties things up a bit.
Posted by Jack Bog | April 22, 2009 12:05 AM
Wheeler has the cajones to call BS on Mayor Creepy and go to the press....Kudos to Wheeler !!
Buh bye Sam.... write if you ever find work again. LOL !!!
Posted by Fonzi | April 22, 2009 2:20 AM
Not so fast, Fonzi. The real story here is that despite all of Mayor Adams' well chronicled screw-ups, he's still in office. The citizens of Portland aren't taking to the streets en masse to protest Adams' track record and to insist that he resign. Given the citizens' passivity, there's a good chance Adams will survive the recall attempts that are in the works. The odds are very solid that he'll remain in office for another 44 months.
You ain't seen nothing yet. The Sam and Randy show, abetted by the other three cowering Commissioners, is just getting started.
Posted by The Crank | April 22, 2009 7:19 AM
"Worst Mayor Ever"? That may be a little premature. He's got big shoes to fill. Apparently you never saw Frank Ivancie at work.
I'm sure Sam will get there soon enough. Of course, I don't think he ever should have been mayor to begin with.
Posted by cbb | April 22, 2009 9:34 AM
Ted Wheeler for Mayor.
Posted by RJBob | April 22, 2009 9:34 AM
recall.
Posted by steve | April 22, 2009 10:39 AM
I think a wise move for everyone right now is to write a quick email to Chair Wheeler, thanking him for his stand on this. I sent one this morning.

I know, I know, I'm tired of Storm Large too. but it's her kind of fanaticism that "Keeps Portland Weird".

Quite simple, the feds are offering all sorts of money up for mass transit projects. Mary Fetch confirmed this the other day when asked why can't the money be diverted to more needed projects instead.
Posted by Darrin | April 22, 2009 12:56 PM
Darrin, you're right. But then why can't Sam stop stealing the $200 Million from the state lottery for Milwaukie Light Rail? Take this $200 M and use it for the Sellwood Bridge and road repair-that falls under "economic development" just as much as Light Rail.
Fetch and her ilk using "that pot can't be used" is getting very old.
