It's all over the local media today that Portland City Commissioner Randy Leonard can't work with Police Chief Rosie Sizer. The situation appears to call into question Mayor-elect Sam Adams's previously announced plan to put Leonard in charge of the Police Bureau. Assuming that the frosty relationship between Leonard and Sizer does not improve, what should Adams do?

If I were Sizer, I'd quit. Who needs that
kind of political grief.
We've all worked with someone we did not like and have learned to deal with it. Maybe a class in constructive confrontation and also effective meetings is needed here.
If I were a Portland police officer, I doubt I'd ever aspire to being chief. The way they come and go, at the pleasure or whim of whomever is mayor/commissioner, )going clear back to Bud Clark and whatshisname/Fat City firing).....dunno that I'd want the aggravation and insecurity. Granted, some past hires were probably questionable in the first place, but the office seems to come with a 24/7/365 dark cloud over it. That said, talents and leadership abilities of mayors/commissioners are questionable too.
Adams would be crazy to get rid of Sizer. Female chief, doing a good job. For what? To throw a bone to Leonard?
I'd say that Adams wouldn't be that stupid, but this is Portland politics we're talking about. He'll probably fire her, see the public reaction then quickly say he didn't mean it.
Maybe Fireboy Randy needs to grow up and act like an adult for a change instead of a whiney brat! I can't believe the voters have elected such a kook for City Commissioner.
I was with the TriMet Detail when Sizer was the Central Precinct Commander. She is widely repected by both management and the rank and file. During her tenure, she has provided some badly needed stability for the Bureau.
Given some of the problems of the time prior to Sizer, I thing Adams would be crazy to replace an effective, respected Chief.
If Randy doesn't care for here her should stick to his silly spraypaint stings and leave policing to the professionals.

How about...keep Sizer, then give Randy a high colonic and send him on a ten mile hike?
Posted by Jon | July 29, 2008 7:43 AM
Sam should fire Randy and give Sizer his mayor job?
Imagine the possibilities.

Randy may be suffering from sushi deficiency.

Since this whole notion was Sam and Randys' idea, both should be recalled.

Maybe they could form a committee and study the matter...

I would vote for number three, becasue Rosie is much stronger and smarter than Randy.
Put Randy to work on the REAL issues facing the city - duct tape and spary paint stings.

The entire city council is a bunch of adolecents.
Posted by Carla | July 29, 2008 2:50 PM
The entire four City Councilors together, with the Mayor added, are not as mature as one typical 15 year old.

What was I thinking?
You're right - that would be a much more efficient waste of public money.
I should copyright that one.

Democracy is wrong. Keep Sizer and fire our elected officials.
