Given the weather forecast for Portland, and the paucity of bloggable news items coming from governments at all levels, here are the words to a little ditty by Portland jazz great Dave Frishberg that combines those two themes:
We must have lunch real soon. Your luggage is checked through. We've got inflation licked. I'll get right back to you. It's just a standard form. Tomorrow without fail. Pleased to meet you. Thanks a lot. Your check is in the mail.
Marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
Marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
Your toes and knees aren't all you'll freeze
When you're in it up to your thighs.
It looks like snow, but you never know
When you're marooned in a blizzard of lies.
You may have won a prize. Won't wrinkle, shrink or peel.
Your secret's safe with me. This is a real good deal.
It's finger lickin' good. Strictly by the book.
What's fair is fair. I'll be right there. I am not a crook.
Marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
Marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
Better watch your step when your old dog Shep
Can't even look you in the eyes.
You're cold and lost and you're double-crossed
When you're marooned in a blizzard of lies.
We'll send someone right out. Now this won't hurt a bit.
He's in a meeting now. The coat's a perfect fit.
It's strictly fresh today. Service with a smile.
I'll love you darling 'till I die. We'll keep your name on file.
Marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
Marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you're in for a big surprise.
When you're marooned, marooned, marooned
Marooned, marooned, marooned
Marooned, marooned, marooned in a blizzard of lies.
A blizzard of lies.

Re: Turbo Tax/Kicker Debacle
Yes, I lost $540 on the deal. Here's my logic--tell me where the holes are:
1) I signed my 2006 Form 40 verifying the information was true and factual. It was not. I did not intend to have the kicker box checked. Thus, I filed a false return. The form is not valid. Oregon is offering a chance to fix this.
2) The language for retrieving the kicker, from the OR Revenue Dept., says to provide a "copy of the front page only of your 2006 Oregon tax return...that shows that you did not check the “donate kicker” box;...2. On the back of the tax return copy, write: "I certify that I did not check the box to donate my tax year 2006 kicker to the State School Fund."
OK, I didn't check the box--The Turbo Tax Program did---on accident.
I see no problem with sending in a copy of the form 40 without a kicker box checked. Period. And certifying I did not check it.
I think in a court of law, this would be stettled in favor of the tax payor--there is ample evidence that the box checked was a mistake, and did not reflect the intention of the payor.
There is no weather. It's just a vast media conspiracy to get us to watch the teevee and buy Oregonians. The Oregonian website yesterday said it was going to snow 7 inches in Portland today. I don't see it.
You could blog about the murder of Benazir Bhutto by Herr Bush's favorite modern-day dictator (besides himself).
The assassination of Benazir Bhutto is probably the biggest news story of the year -- and will certainly have repercussions for years to come, maybe our entire lives -- but you certainly wouldn't know it by looking at the local media Web sites. It's down in the tiny little "other headlines" section... because some SUV sliding off the road is clearly SO much more important.
"Blazers' season officially over"
I thought it was this Headline
I hear Darius will be playing again soon. And then it really will be over -- which was the point of that post. Another Paul Allen genius move that will demoralize the team and send it into a tailspin.
I've got to agree that playing Darius Miles this year is going to be like throwing ice cold water on what's turning out to be a very entertaining Blazers' season.
What a drag.
Of course, they may have to do it to show prospective trades that DM is "healthy" and "a team player". But it REALLY sucks they couldn't have gotten rid of him in the same way they got Zach Randolph outta here.
I guess I should have written they might play Miles to "TRY" to show he is those things. I want him to ride the bench rather than ever play another game in a Blazers uniform.
I would never try to guess about others' motives. Case(s) in point: The Blazers successfully off-loaded Zach Randolph (franchise-killer extraordinaire), Rasheed Wallace, Bonzi Wells, et al.
The Blazers successfully off-loaded Zach Randolph (franchise-killer extraordinaire), Rasheed Wallace, Bonzi Wells, et al.
All of whom had considerable athletic talent left, and even showed some smarts on the court once in a while. Miles is way over the hill, and dumb as dirt. To sit young guys like Outlaw to play him is a fatal mistake.
I think what's happening in Pakistan isn't a struggle between "democracy" and "terrorism"--it's a power struggle. Bhutto and Sharif forcefully and desperately sought power, under the guise of "promoting democracy." both have been implicated (repeatedly) in corruption--by governments and bodies *outside* Pakistan.
CC: Nice to see you got some white stuff. However, IMHO, modest snowfall for people at 1000 feet-plus in the Portland area does not require breathless commentary from every weatherperson in town about how it's going to be a huge storm for everyone.
I am in my 40's and I still get my hopes up for a day or two off work when I hear it's going to snow. Yet, once again, here I am at the office watching it rain outside.
In the future, I would rather hear nothing about snow and just find it on the ground in the morning as a surprise.

Agreed. Paksistan is probably near the top of the list of places that will unleash some serious hurt on the world.
