I hope Tom Potter just keeps walking, and takes Randy and Sam with him.
Isn't it about time that we find some leaders in this community who aren't bought by the major developers in town, and who aren't pandering to the special "interest" groups such as our current leaders are now?
I have a new idea; quit looking at every new idea the CoP staffers present to the Mayor and Councilors of the "newest" thing in urban grouth and begin looking at keeping our city afloat, financially, while improving infrastructure, safety, and all transportation modes, including cars and buses.
You know, even after those three years straight of covering local politics in this town fulltime, I don't know if I've ever been as flabbergasted by a moment as this.
Just like a two year old when they don't get their way. The entire city council are two year olds, if they can't shove something down the throats of the citzens of Portland they really don't know how to handle the situation they caused.
Oh yeah, I might add I really like the idea Randy the dandy was trying to get done, name 5 people to a committee to decide if the name should be approved. Let me see, possible names for committee members, Alvera, Gonzales, Sanchez, Chavez, and Smith, just to make it a diverse committee.
We humans are more alike than we are different. Regardless of minor variation in hue.
How about celebrating Mutts, or Half-Breeds, as it is through cross breeding of populations (and culture) that the path to lasting peace is paved.
It is the racist multi-culturists and their divine inspiration to foment isolation and segmentation of describably different groups for fleeting political gain that pave a path to present and future conflict.
Is Tom illiterate? Functionally illiterate as to history?
How about "Blender Avenue"? As in a distinctive Portland blend, quaint like some mild morning coffee. (I remain fervently anti-tribalist.)
He cleaned out the PDC. He killed the Fire Station condo tower boondoggle. He washed his hands of the Convention Center Hotel. He demoted the oversexed police chief and fired a killer cop. He gave pink slips to the private board that was running the aerial tram fiasco.
Potter didn't get much done, but when you see what Adams brings us -- the same cr*p that his godmother Vera inflicted -- you'll long for the days of Potter.
I agree with Jack. While Potter badly mishandled this issue just wait until Sam the Sham gets in. Sam is the King of back room deals. Wants to raise working folks taxes and fees while cutting business taxes even more.Hundreds yes hundreds of millions more to Homer and the boys via streetcar development.A taxpayer baseball stadium at 1/2 billion and more density shoved down the throats of neighborhoods except for where the elites live
Deception, distain, and politcal correctness are all part of the story.
Tom Potter ran for Mayor as the open candidate who wanted more input from citizens. Even going so far as to create an expensive "vision" project.
But in reality, it's "my way, or the highway" Tom Potter.
Question: Is that deceptive?
Potter quit the democratic process and the input of citizens actually impacted by walking out.
Question: Is that distainful?
Tom Potter fell into this bind because his "vision" is more important than citizen's vision and because he was afraid to run afoul of the "political correctness" police (maybe he is the police). The Portland establishment runs scared of any hint of being called politically incorrect.
Question: Does the need to be politically correct impact this entire spectacle?
I think Potter's background in law enforcement influenced this action.
Potter is used to getting his way...till now.
Finally, is this a metaphor for a larger phenomenom, in which Portland has gone wrong and rotten in a comprehensive way or is this just Tom Potter as an individual?
Potter didn't get much done, but when you see what Adams brings us -- the same cr*p that his godmother Vera inflicted -- you'll long for the days of Potter.

"[w]hat am I supposed to tell my boss just happened?" asks Saltzman aide Brendan Finn.
Try ... "Tom Potter threw a temper-tantrum because he didn't get his way?" Other suggestions?
I haven't seen such great melodramatics since hall government back in the dorms.

Portland's Latino community returns to Woodburn every night as they can't afford the rent or find parking for their cars.
And that is why Grampy wants to use the Chavez street name to placate the group before they begin to complain and call him the 'R' word.

Astounding. "I didn't get my way! Wah Wah Wah."
I don't live in Portland (although my business is there) but this was a new low!
I agree with Carol, time to find some new leaders who truly are.

The City of Portland generally manipulates community input much more carefully than this.
Don't THOSE PEOPLE realize the Mayor knows what's good for this town?
Y'all voted for MajorTomo. Now sit down, shut up, and rename the damn street Cesar Chavez Calle like he told you to.

Dear Time Machine:
That was a great night. The Scone would have been much, much worse.
As I wrote here of Potter:
He cleaned out the PDC. He killed the Fire Station condo tower boondoggle. He washed his hands of the Convention Center Hotel. He demoted the oversexed police chief and fired a killer cop. He gave pink slips to the private board that was running the aerial tram fiasco.

I hear Tom Potter gets cranky if he doesn't get his nap.
Perhaps he has been working too much past his bedtime.
Either that or he may have been at risk of crapping his pants and needed to get out of the meeting in a hurry.

Grampy just doesn't get it.
Since he announced that he is not running for re election, he's not important enough to rise to the level of irrelevance.
