A challenger who could really make a run against Gordon Smith? Today's Trib suggests that it might be this guy.

The sad part of this is that Dave Frohnmayer is a good person, has the experience and has certainly had the maturing experience of life to entrust sound decisions, but because of his political affiliation would have a hard time running. The political climate we are in now where no matter who you are the other party has its villianizing blogs and the solid block of voters in Multnomah County that look at anyone with an "R" affiliation as evil, instead of evaluating the person. It is so vital that we have at least a two party system, so opposing ideas can be aired, though I question how different the R & D are these days and how many puppet strings, pundants, and handlers they have. The same article you linked talks about Potter as disatisfied as Mayor, I suspect for those reasons, he didn't realized how "handled" he would be. Glad you came over to the "I" ranking Jack, now all we have to do is figure out how to influence the selections so we can get real candidates not political party puppets in office.
Whoa, a principled fiscal conservative who broke with the Repubs and is not beholden to special interests. Two words in response to the prospect of his entry into the fray; Me Likee.
What would call it if Super Dave were to sit as trustee for a private fund that is dedicated to buying Oregon government bonds for the private for-profit benefit of investors?
I barely care what label he pins on himself, nor what images people tattoo on their body, either. He's fairly much on his own -- if he's a 'D' he never honors his constituents, if he's a 'R' he stabs in the back his costitutents -- so, has only his own mind in mind ... like an Independent. Labels are lies.
I care to know his instant rapid-fire answers to three questions, no 'qualifying,' 'conditional' preliminary preparing-me-to-hear-his-answers remarks:
In the Senate today, would he vote yes or no on Cheney impeachment, as drawn by Kucinich in House Bill 333? (That's Yes. Or No. Today.)
In the Senate today, would he vote yes or no on any appropriation to any US military deployment anywhere outside of the US, except funding the flights home?
How many funerals for Oregon Guards killed in action (anywhere) since 2001, has he personally attended?
I barely care what label he pins on himself. I care how fast he can answer three questions, thinking on his feet, in his own words expressing his mind.
(If 'I' stands for Ignore constituents asking what he believes in, then, as said, he is only one more name, acting on his own, in his self-interest, not ours.)
The Senate does not vote on the articles of impeachment, but whether to convict once the official has already been impeached by a vote of the House of Representatives.
Also, most appropriation bills begin in the House, although the Senate does vote on them.
I would be interested in knowing what Mr. Frohnmayer has to say about the US foriegn policy of "forward positioning" of our limited military resources.
I would be interested in knowing what Mr. Frohnmayer would have to say about reducing the national debt.
I would be interested in knowing what Mr. Frohnmayer sees as the appropriate approach to filling potential vacancies in the Supreme Court and actual and potential vacancies in the federal judiciary.
I would be interested in knowing what Mr. Frohnmayer has to say about equity in our tax laws and reapportionment of the tax burden. (On this score, we certainly need a counterweight to our "Democratic" senator....who has seemingly jumped ship on the geezers now that he's got his own "retirement plan" tacked down.)
Lastly, I would be interested in what Mr. Frohnmayer has to say about the limited access to quality health care which is the lot of the average US citizen.
Me, two, godfry -- together hearing him speak, (put a sock in the Trib dribble). On the one hand, jab candidates with concrete questions, and the other hand hook up with the guiding principles.
"The Senate does not vote on the articles of impeachment ..." uh-huh, well known truth, right out of the Constitution. Though not a pass to duck the question.

Frohnmayer’s rationale is that partisanship is out of control
He sounds good already...

Hmmm...doesn't the article say that the prospective candidate is John Frohnmayer, a registered independent?
