"Justice Department “is experiencing a crisis of leadership perhaps unrivaled during its 137-year history.” I think this could apply to all three branches of government. Gonzales, as much as I despise him, is only a small segment of the diseased government we have in place. I don't expect much of a cure from this panel. He is far too crass to quit.
Article 2, Section 4: "The President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States, shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors."
Ya think this applies?
People keep talking like Congress is powerless to remove him, but it looks to me like impeachment of Gonzales (for lying to Congress) is both a legal and a practical possibility.
The only Hispanic who has rights worth protecting are those that vote Democrat. If Republicans were to say the crap the Democrats are saying they'd be called racists. All you whining liberal bed wetters, just get over it all ready.
The Republican from Oklahoma [Tom Osborne (?)] called on Gone zales to quit tday.
If either Osborne or especially Specter had any sense they would place "holds" on all DOJ budget bills and authorizations and all judicial nominees, and tell the White House that not a single piece of legislation of any kind that has anywhere within it the phrase "Department of Justice" will move out of comittee in the Senate until Gone zales resigns.
The R's in the Saenat have ot t rn at full speed 180 degrees away from the Bushgies if they have any chance of holding onto seats in '08.
R.J., Republicans ARE saying WORSE crap about Gonzales than Democrats are saying. Read what Graham, Specter, etc. say in transcripts of today's hearing. Only Hatch was nice, and only b/c he wants to be A.G.'s replacement.
Such desparation in invoking A.G.'s ethnicity, using the race card as a shield against criticism, when no sane person thinks ethnicity has anything to do with A.G.'s brazen lying to Congress. Running low on arguments?
Read what Graham, Specter, etc. say in transcripts of today's hearing
Graham and Specter are both despised by the Bush faithful and their opinions aren't indicative of party disfavor. I haven't been able to find the transcript yet, but John Cornyn's (R-TX) statements will give much clearer insight into exactly how much trouble 'ol Al is in.
My guess is he survives. If he doesn't and Bush is forced to hire a competent AG, it will make for a heckuva next 18 months. And no one in the executive branch would want that.

Yes, Cornyn is included in the "etc." from my post. Graham and Specter were just the only names accessible from the top of my head.
Whether A.G. stays or goes, I think the executive branch is in for a heckuva next 18 months.

My point was Specter and Graham are in a much different category of Republican than Cornyn. They're both WAY off the reservation. Graham is likely to be an intra-party target in 2008. As will Specter in 2010. Cornyn represents the 30% who still believe GWB is doing a good job. As long as Gonzo has Texas' junior senator, he'll be fine. When and if Cornyn turns, it'll be over. I just don't see it.

Apparently, Alberto's not a particularly good 'anything.' Lucky for him, he's got friends who aren't particularly good at very much either.

Boy, I wish! That's some dy-no-mite grub on there -- of the Turkish persuasion, I believe.

Error correction.
The R senator from Oklahoma is Tom Coburn, not Tom Osborn, as I incorrectly named him ladst evening.
Sorry.

Chris,
True about Graham and Spector, I think the more telling thing is about the only Rep left defending Al G is Hatch
