Don't confuse the comments with the blog

Lately I've been noticing that commenters are arguing with me about things that I never said. This is one of the risks that come with allowing reader comments on a blog -- not that readers will disagree with you (that's pretty much the whole point of comments), but that they'll start confusing what other commenters wrote with what the blogger wrote.

I won't get into specific examples here -- it's not worth too much finger-pointing -- but let me just say that it's become a recurring annoyance for me. Folks, I do not agree with much of what my commenters say here, even when they are in general agreement with a point I've made. All sorts of observers come on here to chime in with me, but quite often they put a spin on matters with which I strongly disagree.

Just because there's a comment on my blog doesn't mean I endorse what's been said in it. My own comments are limited to the body of the blog itself, plus any comments that I've signed. And so before you take me to task for something I've said, please make sure I've said it? Thanks.

Comments (5)

It's posts like this that leave me wondering a little bit, 'who's he talking about,' izzhe talking to me, izzhe talking to me, who knew?

But this time it is applauding hands () () () for you Jack, not pointing fingers. I was talking to a long time friend this weekend and your name came up, ('Who ya' bloggin',' he asked me; 'bojack,' says I; 'Oh, Jack?, he's a character, I've known him for years,'), and, Jack, I might need to take back all those things I thought maybe I should think about you. I'll think about it. Meanwhile, you be Da Man. It is a very small town. Props () () () Word: bojack

Jack, I appreciate your blog more than you know. It's websites like yours that enable people to discuss topics that are important to us, my hat's off to ya. I always try to keep my comments on a post directed at the specific post and the writer of that post in the particular thread that the post was in. If I've failed to do that or fail to do that in the future, you have my permission to give me a swift kick in the deriere. Geeze, hope I spelt that last woord rite.....;-)

Jack, your blog is okay and I do like the topics you tee up, but lets face it...you are just one guy. The comments section broadens 'bojack' to include the most interesting part of your blog. And, no, I will not confuse your commentary with that of your readers'. How could I? As Tenskwat writes: "and, Jack, I might need to take back all those things I thought maybe I should think about you. I'll think about it. Meanwhile, you be Da Man."

Jack,

There have been some really heated postings lately and I felt like asking "Where is the love?". Still, this blog is very informative and is much appreciated. I'm a fan!

I, too, really appreciate the forum for learning about and discussing issues not developed by local news media. People don't have to agree with each other; that is part of what makes the blog so good. But the accusations and spinnning do get a little out of hand sometimes, so thanks for this post. And I apologize for spelling errors in a comment yesterday. I will try to do better editing in the future.
